I did my first tempo from home today for this trip, and it was certainly a wake-up call to these hills! I knew I was a little tired from the hilly runs the last two days, and this certainly wasn't a flat route either (to far end of Hardscrabble, back via Girl Scout camp). As such, the pace was the slowest I've had lately for a tempo, but I was working hard. I did a 5 mile tempo in 28:57 - averaging 5:48s - but breaking down the splits looks better.
The first 2.7 miles - rolling hills on Hardscrabble and the downhill on Pleasantville Rd - averaged 5:34s. Even better, the following half mile - flat on Washburn - was done at 5:23 pace and felt strong. Then, I started heading back up and the pace dropped.. Came through 4.7 miles having averaged 5:40s to that point, and the final stretch up the steep hill to Hardscrabble brought the average to the overall 5:48.
Good to know that my pace on the flat was so good, but need to get some more strength in my legs!
