St. Mary's City Historic Half Marathon
St. Mary's City, MD
May 1, 2016
My mood was soured a bit to be greeted by a chilly rain on May Day, but I was ready for this race whether I knew it or not.
This race was my second half marathon of the year, and the goal was to break 1:52:00. After a decent first half of the race (55:42), I felt I had that goal time in the crosshairs. As the miles progressed I felt strong and was running steady. Other than some of the usual leg tightness and other small issues associated with running thirteen miles, I didn't face any physical roadblocks.
I rocked the second half (53:43), with a final mile time of 7:33. I can only surmise that it was pure adrenaline and determination that allowed me to pull that off. Especially that much of that mile was uphill and through a winding and twisting park path. But I'll take it! Makes me think I can run closer to 8:00 minute miles more often during a half marathon. I will note that for my training!
The course was through pretty bucolic St. Mary's City and surrounding areas. Ran for a bit on the St. Mary's College campus; a long stretch of a country highway; and some side roads that went down to the St. Mary's River and residential areas.
The race had excellent course support and was well marked. A festive atmosphere and good times despite the dismal weather. Running is fun!
