I was going to do this as a fun run as an excuse to get a run in while in Vegas, but when I got to the event I decided to just go for it and see what happens, despite not having done any 5k training.
Started out way too fast, probably 5:30ish for the first 500m or so. Hit the first mile in 5:50, and although I knew my breathing was way too heavy at that point, I was hoping to hold on to 5:50ish pace. But I kind of knew that it wasn't sustainable and contemplated stopping to strike a pose at the the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.
Nope. Ok, 6:07 for the 2nd mile. Let's see if we can hold this until the end. 1 person passed me during the 2nd mile.
Ok, this just totally blows and I had wished I hadn't turned around at the sign and just kept running back to the hotel instead. Btw, this is really fucking hot for a 5k. 1 more person passed me this mile. I didn't see a sign for 3 miles, so I didn't grab a split. but the last 1.1 was pretty much evenly paced and I had absolutely no kick. I'm surprised only 2 people passed me the entire race with the way I sucked it up out there.
Ok, back to base building and no more racing until I'm ready.
