2012 Lake Geneva Marathon. Very hilly course. Quite pleasant and scenic. I knew that my training for long distances was sub-par, so I wasn't expecting much from this race, time-wise. I tried to keep the pace slow from the beginning, but I'm not surprised that I started quicker than I intended. Mile 2 even clocked in at 8:30, which was way too fast. Predictably, I was going quite slow after Mile 18 or so. But I still felt fine. Just slow. I creeped home in a final time of 4:17, which was just fine with me. Most shocking was that the time was good enough for 3rd place in the M40-44 Age Group! I suppose it helps that there were only 5 people in the group. I am somewhat surprised that a race this small had age groups divided into 5-year groups. Anyway, this is the first time I've won an Age Group award for anything longer than a 5k, and I'll take it, no matter how small the field. Overall I came in 39th place out of 114. I am pleased to knock state #22 off my list.
