Notes

Wow. My main goal was to practice fueling and to consume as close to 60g of carbs per hour as possible. I ate 4 gels and drank most of one 20 oz. bottle of Powerade, which adds up to around 120g of carbs or about 50g per hour. So I fell short of my fueling goal but still consumed way more than I've ever done before. Consequently, I held MP to 20 miles with no real trouble. I could have run further at that pace, but psychologically it wasn't going to happen since I planned to run just 20, and anyway running further would have taken too much out of me. I felt full during much of the run but had no GI trouble. I think my rate of gel consumption is about right, but I could increase it slightly to a gel every 4 miles. And I can easily drink more Powerade. I actually wanted to drink some several times when I wasn't near my car and then ended up eating a gel with water instead when I did reach my car. Before running I followed the full race plan: ate a banana and oatmeal with a half liter of beet juice 2 hours and 15 minutes before running, took a 200mg caffeine pill about 45 minutes before, and ate 4 GU chomps with 500mg of acetaminophen 30 min before. All of that went well. It was cool and occasionally misting lightly with a light wind.
