Brew City Half - Confirmed
Aiming for 1:24 flat for the PR and the confidence boost
Yeah! More to come when I feel like it, including splits.
Notes/Uncategorized Rambling:
A) We did end up staying in Milwaukee last night, which was the right choice - it would have been very rough to drive in and get to packet pickup on Saturday morning.
B) Weird mix of races - the 5K, Half, and Full (!!) all started at 8:20; 10K started at 8:45. Looking at the maps, they definitely needed the 5K out of the way, but the 10K/Half/Full all kind of went in the same direction; just the 10K turned around by mile 2 or so so that the distance would be correct.
C) Course was narrow, which was fine for me, but I suspect the groups a bit further back were having a tougher go. Because the section from 6.8 to 8 ish was doubling back, I saw a heck of a lot of people in that section. Still on the course, the section at mile 8 to mile 10 was rough for me. It was way more rolling than I thought it would be and very twisty, which meant it suddenly was significantly harder to hold pace. I definitely didn't run that section well.
D) Not the best race tactically - looking at these splits versus Parkinson's, I ran basically the same race except that I throttled up in the mile 4-6 section. Looking at the splits, I was about 10 seconds ahead of PR at that point. The problem was mile 8-10 was turning into heavier wind and I was starting to flag a bit.
E) Weather was basically a non-issue. The strong starting tailwind was enough that it threw pacing off a bit, but turning back into the wind was enough that it counteracted the benefit - again, see the splits. Temperature wise, it was warm without being too hot - after the race, standing by the lakefront in short sleeves was chilly. Of course, it's currently 80 in Madison, so that's an upside.
F) I ran in the odlo shorts and the neon shirt. That's probably the marathon kit at this point - and if it is, I definitely need to lube my bits aggressively. I missed a spot today and it's a little stingy.
G) The results were briefly goofed up - I am currently in 2nd in my age group, but when I picked up my award (!!) I was third - so I have a third place medal. I suspect someone registered for the half, but ran the 10K, but they didn't finish at the same finish line, so *shrug*.
This was a good race - Katja had an okay day until mile 8 (the wind and turning were a problem) and Maria did very well and ran with her age group winner for the first 6-7 before realizing that was going to be a problem. Overall, pretty solid. I'm very happy with another sub 1:24, even if I should try for one that isn't on flat bike path eventually :).
