Mesa marathon. Think net time was 3:24 something but I paused tthe watch on my bathroom trips. This was really hard. Like really hard. One thing I keep thinking about is how hard it is to replicate some of the feelings that are bound to emerge in a marathon within training. Can’t say I’ve felt actual muscle failure since Berlin or that level of acid reflux in a race. They’re tough to manage.

So here’s the recap: first 14 miles I felt “great” and after that it switched. I did my best to feel like I was running within myself the first 6-8 miles. Honestly, 6:45 pace felt like 7:15 pace LR from last week. I felt like I was chillllinnn. Around seven, I felt something going on in my calf and didn’t feel like I was getting total flexion. That made me nervous but I felt like I was running cautiously and slowly that feeling fade. I ran mile 6-13 with some guy from New Jersey and then he started pulling ahead which was my first but of trepidation. I felt like I could just maintain and be alright (because we were on 2:59 pace and he said he was trying to run 3:05). Honestly, felt like I was prepping for a bit push around 15-6 for like how it went in training. Instead, L hamstring cramped hard at 15.5. I ran through that but it felt like the ship was taking on water. Around 17.5, stomach started bothering me, legs got heavy and I was just paling water. I’d like to say the rest went quick, but really the goal was not be over ten minute miles. I had two bathroom breaks and then from about 22-25.5, I was inbetween walk/run/dry heave intervals. Finally had a good sore around 25.5, which immediately improved my disposition and I could kick it in..

So, all in all, didn’t really hit any time goals. I was happy with my ability to endure and my body gave what I could. The marathon is just hard, man.
