5k race in San Diego's Balboa Park. Was not expecting a cross-country course but that's what we got. Ran the course as a warm-up and lowered expectations when I found the decent and huge hill in the second half of the course. Started conservatively in mile one and found myself racing with the legendary Eric Clifton (course-record holder of the JFK 50 Mile). I ran scared and away from the women's winner but stayed steady until up and out of the canyon and into the third mile when I cut loose. Was expecting 20-21 minutes but happy to finish 19:32. Woman finished 19:5x and Clifton mid-20 minutes. Good fun. 7th OA.
