2016 Long Grove Turkey Trot 8k
Fun Thanksgiving Day race. First surprise of the day was seeing Somerfield! Did not expect him to come up for this race! Then ran into a bunch of old high school teammates, highlighted by Crief and Jon Smith. Was not nearly as cold as I feared it would be.
Gun went off and immediately a pack of myself, Milner, Somerfield, Crief, Justin and one rando broke off. We were cruising along pretty good through the first part of the course. At the turn off for the 8k portion of the course, Milner and I separated a bit. At about 3.25 miles he dropped me a bit. From there, just ran trying to hang on and not get caught because I knew Crief and Somerfield were right behind. There was a goofy 3 mile mark at the 3.5 mile point in the course, so got a bit worried the course would be way long. Fortunately, it wasn't. The last mile or so was on a straight road. Thankfully, the 8k was started before the 5k this year, so there was a clear, open road instead of having to weave through the walkers like in past years. Got a lot of cheers and several I-L-L calls which helped to get me rolling. Finished decently and held on for 2nd overall. Had a good day hanging around catching up with everyone afterwards!
GPS watch had the course ~.05 miles long (~15-20 seconds or so).
