RPE 8+. This was a moderate ride. It was certainly on the upper end of my moderate. As my HR would rise above my moderate zone I would slip in behind Dave R to get my HR back to where it needed to be. My goal was to keep it around 145. Early on the ride my HR was not as steady as it should have been. I would slip behind Dave too long and my HR would drop low 130's. It was difficult to find that balance on a steady state moderate ride while slipping back and forth out of slip stream. I could not here my alert on my HR monitor when I would exceed 145. I guess the wind was louder than I thought. I dont recall much wind at all. However, once we turned under I-20 I could vaguely hear my alert on my HR monitor. So this helped keep my aware on when to slip in the slip stream to bring HR back below 145.....At one point on a hill, I had to drop back. I was already pushing the upper levels of my moderate effort . We regrouped at Belt Line at the 7-11. Got water and continued to ride at the upper levels of my moderate pace/effort. I consumed 3 bottles of water. One bottle of infinit(430 cals). I mix 1.5 strength. Single strength is 288 cals. 288-316 cals is usually my goal on caloric intake. Not the 400 I expressed the other a.m. I will go back and look at my caloric intake for Longhorn just out of curiosity...I also consumed 440 cals. in gels. Total calories consumed 870 at 3.5 hr ride thats only 248 cals consumed on average per hr. In my defense. I did not begin cosuming calories until 1 hr into ride. So with that said. If I consumed 870 over 2.5 hrs my avg caloric intake is 348 cals/per. It felt like 348 cals. From the way I feel, it is apparent that I usually do not consume this amt. I usually feel hungry after a ride. Although I am hungry. I am not nearly as hungry as usual. The reason I did not consume calories the first hr is that I had a snack and cup of coffee before I went on my ride. And my body was already topped off anyway...In an Ironman I will begin consuming immediately after the swim...
