Trying out some 6:30am running before work, and I'd call it a solid success. A few unnecessary stops but I'm happy with the mileage and how good it felt overall.
What's the goal race?

I'm still looking at 800m, maybe 1600m. My current workout plan is closer in style to XC because that's just the way I know to make it work; my last two years have been low-mileage and I've felt like a weaker runner because of it. I'd probably switch to more speed-based workouts sometime in the fall, but do you think my focus is in the wrong place?

No, I think that's a fine focus. Speed workouts from fall to spring can be alot of time without anything to break it up, however. I'd consider trying to find some thing to train for in the fall, whatever it may be.
