Hamilton Half/10km NZ 2012

10/6/2012 5:21 AM CDT

I ran the 10km event today while my son (15) ran his 2nd half hoping to break 1.30. My 3 youngest children would be completing their kids marathon ( 40 km at 1km a day leading up to this event and the final 2 kms at the event ).

We got up at 5.30 am and left home at 6.30 am for the 1.5 hour drive to the race.

My son got away 1st at 9am. Unfortunately there was no sub 1.30 pacer as advertised and he had to go it alone but went too fast running the 1st 9km in 36 flat and then crashing to finish in 1.32. Im still very proud of him achieving this on fairly low mileage of 20-25 mpw.

I did a slowish 2km warmup and then placed myself at the front of the 10km start.

A guy beside me had no race number on but he was just keeping warm and was looking at a 32 min time. He was friendly and says he trains with Pete Pfitzingers daughter in Auckland.

Another guy was looking at about 35 mins and I was thinking about 37 min for me. My PB is 36.59 from 2 months ago but this course is hilly and the wind was up.

Aiming for 3.40 km splits.

Off we went 1st km in 3.35 with a pretty decent hill adrenalin getting me out fast.

2nd km in 3.23 steep downhill let the legs fly.

3rd km in 3.39 settling into target pace about 8 guys in front of me.

4th km 3.39 overtook a guy here.

5th km in 3.41 feeling good that 1st 5km in 17.57.

6th km 3.41 slight uphill gravel rd but ok.

7th km 3.50 steep uphill starting to hurt.

8th km 3.50 overtook a guy here and then into some underpasses. Met up with the winner 35-44 AG half as our races merged.

9th km in 3.57 Some confusion as I lost sight of the guys in front and a marshall was waving to us. I was in a zombie state and thought Id missed a turn so stopped to query the marshall. Probably cost me 10 secs.

10km 3.49 hurting but kicked for home.

Stopped my watch in 37.08 dam so close what might have been !

Results up now I was 6th and 1st in 35-44 AG winning $80 which I split amongst the kids for their hard work.
