Notes

Good race, surprised myself. Ran with a dude that looked kinda like cataldo for about 10 miles, he pulled away the last mile or so and ended up about 15 seconds ahead of me. Splits were weird because I think the mile markers were put in the wrong spots at a couple points and it was decently hilly.

Started off by standing on the start line for 5+ minutes waiting for someone to say we could start, so I was pretty chilly the first 2 miles, but then warmed up in about perfect racing conditions. very light wind, about 40-50 degrees as the sun warmed it up. My first mile was ~5:50, so I tried to ease up and let the 2 leaders build a gap because I didn't want to die hard. Somehow the 2nd mile still ended up at 5:40. After that the cataldo looking guy pulled up next to me and we ran together holding pretty even pace for most of the race. Some of the splits are probably off because they had the mile markers slightly offset from the 1st to 2nd lap so I could have split my watch at the wrong one. The guy I ran with had his watch set to km for some dumb reason so he was also no help there.

Splits for the race:

Mile 1. 5:50

Mile 2. 5:40 (11:30@2)

Mile 3+4. 12:29 (23:59@4, uphill section)

Mile 5+6+7. 17:21 (41:21@7, mostly downhill)

Mile 8+9. 12:05 (53.27@9)

Mile 10. 5:19 (58:46@10, probs inaccurate)

Mile 11. 5:23 (1:04:10@11, also probs inaccurate)

Mile 12. 7:57 (1:12:07@12, definitely off, downhill section)

Mile 13.1. 6:17 (1:18:25 @ finish)

Tried to stick with the guy the last mile but I was pretty toast and he wasn't slowing up, I ended up 4th overall. The winner was part of the Japanese army training in El Paso at our army base lol. He ran like 1:14.

Took about one gulp of the sports drink at each water station. My right calf started hurting about halfway through and slowly got a little more sore for the rest of the race. I was wearing Altra flats and my legs weren't really used to them. Also felt like I was going to have to pee or poop after about mile 4, but somehow made it all the way to the finish. Probably the longest I have ever run without going to the bathroom.

Amazing race, I see things haven't changed with you having to go to the bathroom mid-run lol
