Notes

So much dumb on this run. I wasn't even planning on doing a long run this week, I wanted to do one last week but it didn't fit it. This day probably would have been better served by a rest day or workout (I know those are 2 opposing workouts). But the dumb doesn't stop there: I should have worn long sleeves or gloves, should have prevented chaffing, should have brought a headlight (or not ran on trails in the dark), shouldn't have run so long, and certainly shouldn't have ran so fast.

But no one ever said dumb things weren't fun, and if they did they were lying or in denial.

Attempt #2 at running every trail at Center, this time I had a better plan and things were going smoothly. I did half of Hillside, then all of Rollercoaster, then the other half of Hillside (which I didn't do on my last long run). That must have added more miles than anticipated.

Next up was a smooth run through Rhythm, then on my way to Squirrel's nest I started getting worried. 1st, being out in the open made me realize the chill in the air since the sunset; and speaking of which, 2nd, it was starting to get dark, something I hadn't anticipated as it hadn't been even close yet on other runs (combo of running longer and starting later than usual today).

After the mile in Squirrel's Nest, I had about 30min of trails still to go in Denman's, and I had already started increasing my already decent pace. Right away in Denman's I ran into bikers with lights on, but for the first 3 miles, I had no problems other than the occasional blindness from biker's lights. I had 1 last chance to get off the trails before the final 2 mile section, but I was feeling confident and even cruised over the part with the most roots. Oddly, my fastest speeds came right before my slowest as I couldn't see very well once I turned around for the home stretch (odd that it was worse when I was facing the fading sunlight, though maybe that was just a coincidence).

At this point I was getting some comments from surprised bikers; one group was just standing around and I heard them wonder where the hell I came from. I was also starting to get tripped up occasionally, but no falls as it was nearly completely dark and I was just running by ambiant light.

I made it out of Denmans, finished up 2 more short trail sections and made it home, realizing that this was longer than anticipated, and that I was cold and chaffed. But my non-performance goal was complete as I ran every trail (or 99.5% for any sticklers). I ran on more bike paths than trails that I doubled on, so I would guess 13 or so miles of trails (the unofficial map says 12 miles).

Sounds like an epic adventure. Love it, and glad you survived.

Being dumb is great fun. I do it all the time.
