Hoover Track

Notes

I decided today would be a workout day, although I was wondering if I'd be up for it earlier in the day. The main factor was that I was already in Des Moines and had access to a track (oh yeah, I had also decided it would be a track day).

2 miles warm-up then 1-mile tempo feeling hesitantly alright. 2 quick hill strides and then a fast lap to get the legs moving. That's when I discovered that the far southern 100m of the track actually still had snow on it (Des Moines, in general, had more snow than Ankeny, though this part of the track must have been shaded). Thankfully, the thin layer didn't feel too bad.

That is, until, I put on my flats. My flats had much less grip and would slip a little on the entire turn. Next up was an 800 in 2:43 starting a bit fast. The next 800 was 2:46. I wasn't feeling great though so I took a break to the convenient porta-potty right outside the stadium.

I did 2 more 800's in 2:50 and felt alright mostly but also seemed to lose a lot of energy and power when slipping on the snow. I had wanted to do more 800's, but thought maybe switching to much shorter would help me avoid the snow. So I finished with 4 x 200m in about 37sec each. And 1 last all out 100m just for the hell of it.

My legs felt great for the faster sprints, but by this time my breathing had falling apart. What to do, what to do.
