--- Good run for me right now. Longest of the year and not the slowest of the 11 times I've run this loop that I almost consider hilly (78 feet of elevation/mile - this is normally 75.1), just the third slowest. Legs felt good and no real soreness in my left foot from my little dog encounter two days ago (it was sore yesterday). Overcame an early dry-heave (only two, not normal three) at 0.78 miles and managed to beat the rain in the midst of a winter weather advisory. ---

Mile splits: 8:51, 8:28 (17:20), 8:54 (26:17) and 8:52 (35:09) last 1.03 miles (8:37 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:21, 8:39, 8:35 and 8:27 pace last 1.02 miles

Had a good one for me right now. Stayed up later than I wanted to the night before and probably wasn’t hydrated enough, but my left foot felt good beforehand after being sore most of the day yesterday from Tuesday’s run-in with the little dog (and subsequent foot rolling). Was worried about this loop because it’s rather hilly, it would be my longest run of the year (4.02 miles) and there was a winter weather advisory in effect. Was debating about short or long sleeve while I stretched (decent one with Bolen kicks), going with short sleeve. Walked outside and it wasn’t as cold as I thought it was going to be and the rain had stopped. Synced up with the Chinese balloon and started on the other side of the street.

Legs felt good early and knew that was a good sign that it would be a good one. Ran in the road down to Yale to make sure I would get the segment up the hill (Garmin one time messed this up for me and I’ve done this since). Took the left on Yale. That first hill was OK, but the second part, damn, that hurt. Just a slog to get up it, especially the last part. This was much harder than coming up the other side via the Church. No wonder this is the only loop where I run this. Was just happy to get to the top at about 0.60 miles. It took me until about 0.73 to feel normal again and then I dry-heaved at 0.78. Already? At least it was only twice and not my normal three times. Took the left on Waite, hitting the first mile in 8:51. Seemed a bit fast for the hills and it was for me at 8:21 adjusted.

Got under the bridge, stepping in the mud and then in puddles to clean off my shoes. Got past the one little stoplight (North Ave.) that always seems to be busy, running behind a truck and crossing. Got stuck at the stoplight on 1.30 miles on Broadway. Probably could have gone but later went on a green arrow. Ended up stopping for 24 seconds. Got across onto Buena Vista Ave. feeling pretty good, despite having to duck to the shoulder with cars coming at me. There was some uneven dirt and driveways that I had to deal with and not just flat ground. More traffic than I’m used to on that road. Felt good the more I ran on that stretch. Took the left on Cypress Ave., down that hill, crossing the trolley tracks and hitting the 2-mile mark in 17:20 following an 8:28 (8:39 adjusted). Even though the second is the easiest mile of the Lemon Grove loop, I knew I’d break 9:00 pace after this mile.

Actually felt good on the long stretch on Lemon Grove Ave. to Broadway, which is unusual. Even with the slight uphill. Was feeling it just a little bit as I got to Broadway, ducking left to beat a stopped trolley and cutting back over. Was still feeling good on Broadway down to Waite, but was dreading the upcoming uphill up Waite and Yale. Got past the stoplight on North without any issues again and missed the mud this time underneath the bridge. Didn’t feel the best up the little uphill, hitting the 3-mile mark in 26:17 following an 8:54 (8:35 adjusted). That was faster than I thought it would be.

Realized shortly after that the dreaded Murray Hill would only be about 0.25 miles or so. Felt OK early on but hallway through couldn’t believe I was only halfway through. Finally got to the top and then kind of brain farted on the way down. The first steep part I zoned out and really don’t remember much from it. Focused again at the flat part, then looked at my Garmin and used the downhill the rest of the way. Got to University, still feeling good and held the same pace for the finish. Ran the final 1.03 miles in 8:52 (8:37 pace - 8:27 adjusted).

Altogether it was 4.03 miles in 35:09 (8:44 pace). Somehow wasn’t the slowest of the 11 times I’ve run this, but the third slowest and 2:55 off my PR. This was a good run overall though. It was my longest run of the year and at 8:30 adjusted probably my best all things considered. This was a borderline hilly run for me so I’ll take it. Making some progress.
