--- Knew all day that this was going to be a fast one for me. Initially flirted with trying to run the second loop (1.47 miles) 1:00 faster but the first one ended up being faster than I thought. Probably a progressive run as I went 12:19 and 11:48, closing the final 0.94 at 7:49 pace and final 0.47 at 7:31 pace. Fastest run of the year (previous was 8:33 pace for 2.49 miles). A little dog chased me up the LMAAC hill the second time, and I rolled my foot on the outside of the sidewalk before yelling “Get out of here!” to the dog and then “Watch your fucking dog!” to the girls supposedly watching him. It’s sore now. Dry-heaved (normal three times) at 1.72 miles. ---

Mile splits: 8:29, 8:19 (16:48) and 7:19 (24:07) last 0.94 miles (7:47 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:15, 8:16 and 7:50 pace last 0.92 miles

Knew all day that this was going to be a fast one for me right now. Just the way I’ve been doing my eight-day cycles (three days on, one day off), this last run (on the seventh day) has generally been fast for me considering my weight and shape. Had a couple of thoughts in the day, but all involved running two loops of the 1.47-mile Pedofile Adjace. One thought was running the first loop and then trying to run a minute faster for the second loop (looking back that was kind of insane unless I went slow for the first one). Another was having each segment on the second loop be faster than the first. Another was running it as a consistent tempo and the final was just to run easy. Probably not enough energy as I only had jerky and a fig bar for lunch. Had a decent stretch with some Bolen leg kicks. Got going with the Garmin as the China balloon gave me their blessing. It was pretty windy out as a storm was on its way.

Started out and felt good the first few steps and I knew I was in trouble. Tried to slow down but I felt pretty good. Was at 2:05 at 0.25 miles. Felt good on the Normal Ave. for once and that stretch went by quick. Took the right on Parks, hitting 0.50 miles in about 4:18. Got up the LMAAC hill OK, but knew that a dry-heave would be coming the second time up it. Was breathing hard on the top but I recovered quickly and started to roll on the Dale Ave. downhill. Hit the mile in 8:29 (8:15 adjusted). That was faster than I thought it was going to be. Got down University and was feeling good. Opened it up a little bit, running the final 0.47 miles of the first loop in 3:50 (8:10 pace). Ran the first loop in 12:19 (8:23 pace).

The second loop was a bit tougher. Came across the 1.50-mile mark in about 12:36. Took the left on Normal Ave. Did not feel the best there like normal (no pun intended). Took the right on Parks and was really breathing hard. Was at 16:48 at two miles and couldn’t believe I was holding that pace following an 8:19 (8:16 adjusted). So 8:15-8:16 adjusted to start. Was focused on the uphill as I knew that was the last hard part of the loop. Was working hard. Passed a group of four girls on the sidewalk by running out on the road. Was glad they didn’t say anything to me. About halfway up the hill I could hear a sound behind me. I heard one of the girls yell for it to come back and then a little dog came up on my right side. I was a little afraid it was going to try to bite me and I jumped to the left, promptly rolling my left foot where the side of the sidewalk meets the dirt. I didn’t notice the pain right away but was pissed. I yelled “Get out of here!” to the dog and thought about kicking it to kingdom come. Then I yelled “Watch you fucking dog!” to the girls. I showed them I’m sure. Got to the top and was really struggling. It took me a long time to get back to where I felt good again, probably a little past Normal Ave. But then I started rolling again and feeling good. Thought a dry-heave was coming but somehow it didn’t, hitting the first mile of the second loop in 8:17, so 12 seconds faster than the first one. How (?) I wondered. Thought it would be about as fast as the first one and then I’d pick it up. Kept the same pace until I hit University. Somehow I kept staying well below 8:00 pace the rest of the way. Eventually dry-heaved at 1.22 miles (usual three times) and finished strong. Ran the final 0.47 miles of the loop in 3:32 (7:31 pace) and 11:48 total for the second loop (8:02 pace). Damn.

Altogether ran 2.94 miles in 24:07 (8:13 pace) (8:08 adjusted). Probably more of a progressive run as I went 12:19 and 11:48, closing the final 0.94 at 7:49 pace and final 0.47 at 7:31 pace. It was my fastest run of the year my a long shot (previous was 8:33 pace for 2.49 miles). The outside of my left foot is sore now as I write this some three hours after and hamstrings are a little tender. I know from being in semi-old man shape a few years ago that my hamstrings tend to strain when I get down into the 7:30 range so that makes a little sense to me. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow and then going into 10-day cycle (four days on, one day off), starting Thursday.
