--- Went out a little quick for a 6:00 first lap of HCHS (8:28 pace) but settled down for a following 6:10 and 6:14. Suppressed a dry-heave around 1.75 miles until it came out of nowhere at 2.30 miles (usual three). It was so damn dark out there but running always seems easier for me in the dark. Nice run all things considering. ---

Mile splits: 8:32, 8:42 (17:14) and 5:03 (22:17) last 0.59 miles (8:34 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:29, 8:44 and 8:33 pace last 0.58 miles

Planned to run late tonight the whole week, hopefully about 9 p.m. Almost made it with a 9:24 start. Was planning on three loops around HCHS (0.71 each lap) and then the 0.46-mile NOAB (Normal Out-and-Back) add-on for about 2.59 miles. It was super dark out and I was a bit worried about running without much light, but figured I would adjust if I had to. Had a quick stretch and noticed that my left hip was still bothering me from a bad sleep/form on Friday night. Got ready to go and walked to the starting point with my Garmin linking up with the Chinese balloon.

My legs were heavy as soon as I started but loosened up as the run went on. Was going to try and not look at any splits or my Garmin except for around the first and second-mile marker. I did check when I started breathing hard which was at 0.16 miles (1:20). Got up the first hill OK around the Helix High School entrance. Got through the handicap ramp near the stairs. It was so dark through the hallways. Got to the end ready to use the downhill to get down to Highlander Way but there is now a gate up at the bottom. But it was propped open, but I had to slow down, push open the door and start again. Not ideal as that was the only downhill part of the loop. Opened it up a little after on Highlander Way. Ended up running the first loop (0.71 miles) in 6:00. Damn. Knew that was quick and I wouldn’t be able to keep that up right now. Tried to figure out the pace and guessed 8:27 (it was 8:28).

Purposedly slowed down after the first loop, fearing some dry-heaves and my dying pretty hard. The second loop was much tougher than the first. Got up the little hill and was feeling it when I got to the top, staring down the handicap ramp area and hitting the first mile in 8:32 (8:29 adjusted). Picked it up late by the hallways and was feeling good again. But I stopped again at the gate. Slowed down to a complete stop and I let the door close slowly to not let it bang as loud as it did the first loop. Got back into the groove on Highlander Way and saw a guy walking my way. Felt like he was going to say I wasn’t allowed to be running this late on campus but he was just a normal person. Ran the second loop in 6:10 (8:41 pace).

The third loop was a grind. It took me a long time to recover off the little uphill at the entrance. Felt a dry-heave coming at about 1.75 miles and burped up the Rubio’s California burrito I had three hours prior. Slowe down to another complete stop at the gate before hitting the 2-mile mark in 17:14 following an 8:42 (8:44 adjusted). A lot slower that second mile. Third lap was slower to in 6:14 (8:40 pace).

Still had the NOAB (Normal Out-and-Back) and was dreading just the 0.46 miles more. A dry-heave came out of nowhere at 2.30 miles followed by another and, after a beat, the normal third. Slowed down after that third one. Went out (0.23 miles) in 2:00 (8:44 pace) and picked it up on the way back (0.23 miles) in 1:53 (8:10 pace). So 3:53 for the 0.46-mile out-and-back (8:26 pace).

Altogether it was 2.59 miles in 22:17 (8:37 pace). That was my fastest run of my latest comeback following my 79-day break. Walked to the next driveway and back. Had a nice three-day block here but looking forward to a day off tomorrow.
