--- So many excuses not to run (I have a cold, had been outside for over four hours, had two beers and a soda (and no water), it was dark (and chilly), it was dinner time), but I managed to still get out and do it. Hopefully I can stay this committed when running more than 2.13 miles. Ran three HCHS laps, going super slow on the last two without really knowing it because it was so dark out and I wasn’t looking at my Garmin. Lower back was hurting for most of the run and I had a cramp the final 0.50 miles. Dry-heaved at 2.03 miles, and was breathing so hard and loud most of the run. ---

Mile splits: 9:16, 9:31 (18:47) and 1:07 (19:54) last 0.13 miles (8:35 pace)

Adjusted splits: 9:11, 9:34 and 8:24 pace last 0.12 miles

Almost didn’t run tonight. Was really close. Woke up later than I wanted and went to a friend’s to play cornhole from about 12:30 p.m. until almost 5 p.m. Had two beers and a soda while playing, so when I got back home and smelled dinner I really just wanted to bag it and start a new eight-day cycle tomorrow (instead of running today and taking off tomorrow like I planned). But I quickly talked myself into it, got on a long-sleeve shirt and got ready to run. Did a quick stretch, really focusing on the hips and lower legs, which usually hamper my running later in the day lately. The plan was three times around Helix High School for about 2.13 miles. I had three worries going in. The first was that there is a new gate (well new as of last-August when I was running there) that I wasn’t sure would open during the loop. It would come about 0.55 miles into the 0.71-mile loop, but is right after the lone downhill. Number two, it was super dark out with no lights on the tennis courts or not much lighting on Lowell Ave. Out of the 0.71 miles for the loop, I’d say only 0.15 is properly lit, and that’s the Helix High School parking lot and almost to the baseball field. The rest would be in mostly dark. Number three, just how would I feel being outside for four hours and not hydrated.

Felt pretty good for the first loop, at least the first half. Was at 2:16 at 0.25 miles. Started to breath pretty hard after that and it was loud the rest of the way. Was able to get past that door/gate, slowing down a little bit and opening it. At least that issue was solved. Ran the first loop in 6:27 (9:13 pace).

Really started to feel it early on in the second loop. I kept coming up with excuses to stop. My lower back was starting to hurt, something I’ve dealt with most of the runs this year now that I think about it. For me it was just get to the next turn. Hit the first mile in 9:16 after almost missing the right on the handicap ramp. Almost stopped a little after that, thinking maybe go half of the 2.13 miles and take a break, but I kept going. Got through the door once again, feeling a little better on the flat, dark stretch on Highlander Way. Missed the loop button and hit a display button instead, so I added two seconds, making the second loop in 6:47 (9:26 pace), 20 seconds slower than the first loop. I wasn’t really paying too much attention so I didn’t notice the change.

The third loop was rough. My lower back kept getting worse and I started to get a cramp in my lower-right side of my stomach at 1.63 miles, which lasted the rest of the way. I really dogged it early on the second loop and right by the HCHS parking lot. Was going really slow up that hill. The next time I looked at my watch a little past the ramp I saw that I was running 10:35 pace. Damn. I wonder how long I was running that slow. I picked it up a little bit through the hallways there and got back through the door/gate, hitting the 2-mile mark in 18:47 following a 9:31 second mile. Really picked it up on Highlander Way right after the 2-mile split and dry-heaved shortly after at 2.03 miles. It was loud, but just twice instead of my usual three. Finished somewhat strong but the last few steps were basically slowed to a walk. Ran the final loop in 6:41, so six seconds faster than the second one and 14 seconds slower than the first.

Altogether it was 2.13 miles in 19:54 (9:21 pace). I’ll take it for what it was. The other option was not running so I can’t be too mad. Walked to the other side of the driveway and back home. Looking forward to a day off tomorrow and slowly bumping up my mileage (as pathetically low as it is right now).
