--- This was a good one for me right now. Happy because on my phone call out of the door at work I decided not to run, but I changed my mind when I got home and got out the door quickly before any more second thoughts. It was dark out so I only looked at splits at 0.25 (2:11) and 0.50 (4:25), and then when it beeped for first mile of each loop, just going on feel. Ran 1.24-mile WTSLs in 10:28 and 10:14, then a quick (more because I couldn’t see that well) add-on. Last 2.34 miles overall were at 8:10 pace. ---

Mile splits: 8:31, 8:18 (16:49) and 6:43 (23:32) last 0.84 miles (8:00 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:24, 8:08 and 8:08 pace last 0.83 miles

Happy with this one today. Almost didn’t run when I called home while I was leaving work. The only reason I ran was probably because I didn’t stop to pick up food. Once that wasn’t happening I thought about running again. When I got home I quickly put on my running clothes and kind of hurried to get ready. Had good stretch as my legs were quite sore. Legs felt much better after. Changed my original plan of WTSL + Rosebud + NOAB because I thought Rosebud might be too dark. Changed it to WTSL x 2 + Blocked Tennis Courts as I double checked that the lights were on around the tennis courts (they were). But when I finally got outside they were off. Just figured I would figure something out. Got synced up to the Chinese balloon and I was ready to go.

Felt sluggish in the beginning. Man it was dark out. Kind of build up speed a little bit. Was at 2:11 at 0.25 miles and was surprised at how slow that was. Picked it up the hill a touch. Turned left on Junior High Drive. Got through that part OK, hitting 0.50 miles at 4:25. Jeez. I know it was net uphill 43 feet or so but still seemed slow. Picked it up from there, really once I took the left on Parks. Pretty much just got into a nice rhythm, not looking at my Garmin, only for mile splits when they beeped (so the first and the second loop) and when I later had a cramp at 2.20 miles. Got going on the downhill and stayed about the same pace past Dale Elementary. Got down to University (and light). Opened it up a little but as usual. Was shocked to see the first mile split of 8:31 (8:24 adjusted). So that meant 2:25 first half and 2:06 second half. I know it was a little uphill out and a little downhill back but still that seemed fast. Then ran the final 0.24 of the first loop in 1:57 (8:08 pace) and the first loop altogether in 10:28 (8:26 pace).

Seemed to keep pace on the second loop but wasn’t looking at my Garmin. Started to breathe hard up the little hill to get to Junior High Drive and the hard breathing lasted pretty much the rest of the way. Had no idea of what pace I was going but I figured sub-8:30. Struggled a bit on Parks near Dale Elementary, basically from Normal to Sturgess or so. I knew that the 2-mile mark was somewhere in there but I didn’t want to see (it was 16:49 after an 8:18 (8:08 adjusted). Got back down the hill and took the left on University. Did take a quick peak toward the bottom to see 8:35 pace about the same time I got a cramp at 2.20 miles. But then I ran the first mile of the second loop in 8:16, some 15 seconds faster than the first loop. Damn. Wasn’t expecting that. Ran the final 0.24 miles of the second loop in 1:58 (8:12 pace) and the whole loop in 10:14 (8:15 pace), 14 seconds faster than the first loop and a PR (21st time running it).

Then jogged (not really today) across the street to the next starting point. Thought I messed it up and didn’t get the full 0.02 miles (rather the long 0.01) to cross but I did because I’m a pro. This part was really dark, especially from home plate at the softball field down the left-field line. There were some portable lights on the grass field which made that part easy as I hit the fence and turned around. Was laboring still but said just 0.17 miles left. Went back through the dark the way I came, picking it up more, especially when I got to Highlander Drive. Ran the 0.34-mile Blocked Tennis Courts in 2:42 (7:57 pace), just under a 2-second PR (out of 13 times running it).

Altogether it was 2.84 miles in 23:32 at 8:18 pace (8:13 adjusted). Even more impressive was that the final 2.34 miles were at 8:10 pace. Happy for a good run considering my weight and shape. Nice to get in another three straight runs. I liked starting out slow and slowly building up pace. Might start doing more of that.
