--- Note to self, next time do run and then zoo, not zoo and then run. Went out a bit too hard in the first mile of this tough loop for me right now and never really recovered. Dry-heaved four times (0.70 miles (once), 1.38 (twice), 2.08 (twice) and 2.66 (once)), still getting over a cold. Happy to get it in though. ---

Mile splits: 8:53, 9:23 (18:16) and 6:39 (24:55) last 0.72 miles (9:14 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:33, 9:20 and 9:06 last 0.72 miles

Decided the night before after a few beers that I was not going to run in the morning before the 11 a.m. San Diego State-New Mexico basketball game and would therefore go after a planned trip to the zoo. Was dreading this run all afternoon, especially as I went up a bunch of flights of stairs. Got out pretty quick when I got back. Did a quick stretch. Only had a little water for the day, probably one glass. Had to shit but decided the wait. Was planning on running the tough (right now) 2.27-mile Massachusetts loop plus to Normal Ave. and back for a total of about 2.73 miles, which would be my most of the year (as pathetic as that is).

Started and almost stopped right away because the Garmin didn’t seem to be working, but it caught up. My lower back was hurting from the first few steps. Was going kind of quick early on, I think partly because of running in the dark and partly because I have no concept of pace right now. Was around 1:51 if I remember right or so at 0.22 miles near Normal Ave. The first hill was OK early, but as soon as I took the turn it started to really suck. I struggled like always on the first part. Was breathing hard which lasted throughout the run. Got that little downhill and was happy for a few moments before the next uphill just killed me. Short and steep but was really slowing me down. Jogged across Yale Ave. on the top and was just happy for that hill to be over. Hit my normal 0.67-mile split in 6:09 (9:14 pace) and the 0.75-mile split in 6:54 (9:12 pace). In between came my first dry-heave at 0.70 miles, but it was just once instead of my normal three. Got going pretty good down the hill, not looking at my watch. Took the right on Waite Ave. still feeling good. Hit the first mile in 8:53 which seemed pretty damn fast to me and it was as it was an 8:33 adjusted.

Struggled to get to Massachusetts and almost dry-heaved there after taking a right. Was not looking at my Garmin on that stretch on Massachusetts but I had to have slowed down a ton. Dry-heaved (twice) at 1.38 miles. Was kind of laughing because that was already two dry-heaves (three total) about halfway through the run. I was so happy to get to the top of the hill around 1.61 miles but I was making all kinds of noises with my wheezing and voice. Just kind of letting out grunts of “Uhhh” or “Whew” etc. Was not looking at my Garmin but I didn’t seem to be taking advantage of the downhill to get back to University Ave. Took the right on University and it was a slog the rest of the way back to the start. Hit the two-mile mark in 18:16 following a 9:23 (9:20 adjusted). Jeez. What a drop off. When I’m running well the second mile is faster than the first for me on this loop, not 30 seconds slower.

Slowed down even more after the slow two-mile split, dry-heaving (twice) at 2.08 miles after getting past Yale and maybe picking it up a tad. At least I was consistent with the dry-heaves so far - 0.70, 1.38 and 2.08. That’s every 0.70, 0.68 and 0.70. Had many visions of just stopping or calling it day at the end of Massachusetts but just told myself I can keep going slow. Ran the final 0.26 miles of the loop in 2:36 (9:59 pace) and the 2.26 miles overall in 20:52 (9:14 pace).

Just had the out-and-back to Normal Ave. to go, just 0.46 miles. Dogged it on the way out in 2:09 (9:22 pace) but immediately picked it up on the way back, running the 0.23 back in 1:55 (8:19 pace) and dry-heaving a final time at 2.66 miles right before the finish at 2.72. The 0.46-mile add-on was in 4:04 (8:50 pace).

Altogether it was 2.72 miles in 24:55 (9:10 pace). Was pretty spent after, but glad I got it in. Just need to keep tackling these loops and everything will get easier.
