--- Four easy laps on slippery, frosty grass, dirt and mud. Legs felt good but I think I was breathing too hard. Slipped on a muddy spot at 2.48 miles and slid a good 6-to-7 feet (felt like 60-to-70) before my 18-year-old athleticism took over and kept me upright (a bush also stopped me somewhat). Laps were even at 6:34, 6:34, 6:31 and 6:30. Sun came up over the hills late in the last loop. Ending a fourth week of a brutal seven-week work stretch. Need to just keep showing up. ---

Happy to get up and run. Woke up at 5:15 a.m. with plans of starting my run at 6:15 because I needed to be to work by 8 at the latest and I wouldn’t be home again until 9:30 p.m. if everything went perfect. Really didn’t want to get up but I did it. Did a shortened version of my normal routine, followed by an OK stretch and I was ready to go. I don’t think I mentioned this but I strained a muscle on my right side, that stretches to the back. Have noticed it for maybe three days now. The worst part is I did it while laying in bed and basically just moving to another side. It reminds me or some recent rib injuries I’ve had on that side, ever since the nasty fall in Dec. 2018 in Frisco, Texas. Since then, I had a summer thing in 2019 and a summer thing in 2021. This is in a little different spot and not nearly as bad, but it still reminds of the issues. Anyway, it has been bothering me a little more each day. Not when I run (kind of like me left foot deal) but when I sit and lay down. Was back and forth a bunch of times of running four laps around the 0.75-mile Helix Fields, which would be on grass and dirt, or three times around the 1.00-mile Parks, which would be pavement. Both would be relatively flat. Hadn’t run once on the dirt/grass over the last four days of my 10-day plan so really wanted to do it. Just didn’t know how wet it would be. Finally decided to try one lap and if it didn’t work out I’d improvise on the pavement. Walked over to the starting point past the tennis courts.

Started off and legs felt OK. Wasn’t worried about how fast this was just wanted to run. Ended up running four easy laps in 6:34, 6:34, 6:31 and 6:30. Felt like I was breathing a little too hard but it wasn’t like I was going too fast. This is probably my easy pace right now (8:45), but then again the grass was kind of slippery. A little icy and slippery and I was kind of tip-toeing around some mud. Felt like things were going OK and then I slipped on a mud spot at 2.48 miles (turning left back to the baseball field past the modified field) and slid like 6-to-7 feet (felt like 60-to-70). Luckily I was athletic enough not to fall. But seriously it was bad for a minute and I just was thinking about my right side and if I went down I might be hitting the DL. Slid all the way until a bush got in my way, but really I about stopped on my own. It took a bit to get back into rhythm after that but I did. Started to notice the sun peaking up around the hills up by Sonny’s the last 1-to-2 minutes when I turned right past the uneven rock trail. It was a cool sight.

So ran it at 8:45 pace with an average heart rate of 153 with a max of 167. I’ll take it for now. Happy to get through my first 10-day cycle (four days one, one day off). Day off tomorrow and time to start a new one. In the midst of a brutal 6-to-7-week cycle and almost four weeks in. Need to just keep plugging along. I’ve made it this far while working 75-to-80-hour weeks (with a shorter 59 one in there). What’s two more weeks? Then we get after it.
