Absolutely perfect night for a track 5000m at Simpson, low 50s temps and low wind, and gun went off right as the sun went down. Race was being paced at 68- 69 per lap by a few Augie guys, so the plan going in was to just let them do their thing and hop on the train a little back of them. That's pretty much what happened, we were bunched up a bit the first 200 but by the time we hit the back stretch for the first time I was on the rail in about 10th place and we were lined up single file behind the pacers. The 1st 6.5 laps felt pretty dang good and I was just clicking off 69-70 per lap riding the pace train

I didn't feel like I'd slowed down, but all of a sudden around 3k the train started moving away from me, and Chris passed me. Now looking back at the splits, I see I went from running 70s to 73-74s, yikes. Chris got maybe a 20m gap on me, and I was just trying to keep running strong. Looking back I should have known I was slowing down based on what I was seeing on the clock each lap, but it just wasn't clicking in my head in that moment for some reason. Got to like 800 to go and thought it looked like Chris was coming back a bit, I was able to reel him in and move by at the bell and went into a good kick for a 62 second close

Track 5k's are hard and I got way too content on laps 8-12, gotta clean those laps up in future track 5ks. and remember that if I feel like I'm running the same pace after 3k, then I'm probably slowing down. I need to be able to crank the effort up the last 5 laps to run an even and strong track 5k, probably just something that will come with more consistent training and a bigger base, which I'm lacking right now. Super pumped to get my first PR since Oct 2019 (Chicago Marathon) and a great result after my awful road 5k last Sunday. Nice to feel like I'm moving in the right direction again and excited to put in a solid month of training before giving 5k on the track a go again
