Notes

Nice recovery run after work. Felt pretty good. As I finished my run, I checked for mail in the mailbox and pulled out this week's copy of "The Warrenville Sentinel." On the back page of this publication I discovered a column called "The Happy Runner." Some guy named Dwight Sherman writes it. This week's topic was winter running and, as much as I complain about winter running, he's right on a lot of things. Here are a few excerpts:

"There is nothing quite like coming home to a warm home and hot shower after spending an hour or two braving the elements. I personally enjoy the exhilaration I get in the winter compared to the debilitation of running the heat and humidity of summer. There just seems to be more oxygen and less stress on winter runs. I'll take a day in the teens over a day in the eighties any time."

"One ting for certain I've learned over the years of winter running, it is rarely as bad outside as our minds tell us it is. By staying inside and hibernating all winter, we miss a lot. Most times it is peaceful and quiet and I feel like the outdoors is mine alone because everyone else is inside. The thought has crossed my mind many times 'they don't know what they are missing!'"

"For certain, running in the winter means most weekday runs will be in the dark, especially form now until the end of December when the days are the shortest of the year. I must say some of my most memorable runs have started in the dark and finished at sunrise, and there is something very special about running on a quiet moonlit path through the quiet woods."
