Notes
8-13 mph wind, but I was in neighborhoods, so it didn't affect me greatly.
Whew! 18M at 7:36 average pace over hills. This was a tough run, mentally, though not as physically tough as some runs. It was at least drizzling for most of the run and I got drenched in pouring rain twice. There were many puddles to get around or over and this was especially difficult for the first 3 or 4 miles, which were in the dark.
I ran one warmup mile, then tried to average 7:50 for 9 miles, and then 7:30 for 9 miles for an average pace of 7:40. I wound up averaging 7:46 for the first 9 and 7:27 for the second 9. The first hints of any discomfort were about mile 15 or so. No pain, just weariness.
My effort level felt a little harder than my 18-miler at 7:29 pace on relatively flat surface, although my heart rate profile was similar. I didn't feel fantastic at the end, but probably could have handled this pace on a similar marathon course, or perhaps 5-10 seconds/mile slower to be conservative. If I were planning a similarly hilly marathon in similar weather, I would try to average 7:45 over the first twenty.
