Hey Peeps - 10 road miles this a.m. on very tired legs.  Managed it in about 1:45 with walking breaks every 20 minutes (or more).  The shins are pretty sore today, so I need to be vigilant about icing them.

Stumpy - I haven't flirted with nausea for awhile now, and it's been nice.  Yesterday I popped a Clif shot blok when I was eating a sandwich and I had slight twinges.  Didn't use another blok the rest of the run and no nausea.  Kind of a bummer since I just bought a whole new box of those suckers.  Will have to substitute those calories with something else, though, since I've been relying on them for about 60-90 of my caloric intake every hour.

Cindy - 70s and then more snow??  And yes, high stepping through snow counts as extra workouts.

Carol - Of course we recommended you!  Keeping fingers crossed you get picked.

Well, need to get some transcription done before Pops comes over this afternoon for dinner.  The Hub is making a "small" () lasagna.  I'm already  hungry thinking about it.

    Take care ~

Thanks for starting us off on a new week Leslie.  Nice 10spot.  Take care of those shins.  Speaking of shins....a wise and talented runner once told me to do the duck walk and that would strengthen those shins up.  It worked for me.  And as far as I know, Chuck Berry was never bothered by shin splints.

Got the 20 miler in this morning/afternoon.  Still fairly breezy, but nothing like the last couple days.  I had to jump ovr a tree that had blown ovr right across the trail.  This happened several months ago, too.  Leslie is probably rolling her eyes ovr that one.    When she comes across a downed tree, she probably chews it up and spits it out.

      Have a great week folks!

        Just poppin' in real quick...

Kelly! Good to hear from you! Take care of that achilles. Sounds like the mileage ramp-up is going ok.

Leslie - nice take on Bonkos!

Jim - that is a great story about your crazy friend, I sure don't condone violence, but that's exactly what was being committed against him.

Had a few really tough days and nights of being really sick - fever, nausea, etc - too disgusting to talk about - I had not been that sick since 1994. Still not anywhere near 100% but feel like I can do more than lay helpless, and I can actually even eat now. OTOH, the legs feel great! Packing now for Mexico, might try to get a run in while there.

See you in a week or so!

          Hey All,

Thanks Leslie and nice quote. I like that one. Your legs deserve to be tired and hope your lasagna went down well.

Carol- hope it works out ok for you. You are a winner no matter what happens. I don't blame you for bailing on that king-size headwind on your bike.

Jim- that's some story. I guess I could run with a Clint- sized pistol too, be a little heavy though. As it was, I instinctively reached down and since they're shore houses, got a fist full of driveway pebbles. On the last 10miles of that run the other night, I fantasized about what I would do if they stopped and came after me. Nighttime, deserted summer neighborhood in the winter, I would duck into someone's backyard. If the perp came back there, I would ambush him and lay some of my boxxing practice on him. I pitty the fool.

BTW- google "Sporn Training Harness" ( I get the knockoff brand at Petsmart for less) . That and I clip the loop of the leash on my waterbottle holder belt and it's handsfree with Buddy.

Ev good mileage, good job on your 20, and BA points for getting in the wind. Coming down to the wire for your race. Any more 20's planned or is that it? I'm doing mine the weekend before yours.

Hey Kevin. Your log is full of workouts and it looks like you owe us a race report young man.

Cindy- you'll get up to speed. That white stuff is rough to go through.Glad you had what seems to be a lucrative ski season.

Nice to see you Kelly! I'm sure you'll be banging out the miles before you know it. I was thinking about you back in Feb when some friends I stayed a few days at Okemo. I was hoping to get to some other Vermont mountains but RL got in the way. Sounds like you must have had a good ski season as well this winter.

Hope Arla feels better for her jaunt down south.

Hi Jewels and any other folks out there.

Rainy and windy so I wimped and went inside today. 18er on the mill and ab machines.

Thanks for getting the week started for us Leslie......sounds like you have the nausea under control at the moment!

Nice 20 miler Ev......very, very nice! Sorry you had to jump over that fallen treeSmile Leslie might have been able to pick it up and relocate it off to the side of the trail for you but.......

Glad you are starting to feel a little better Arla. That post sounds like something you would post AFTER you got back from Mexico! Just kidding......enjoy and have fun!

Carol, it was a pleasure filling out the information for you!

A couple of shorty runs this week......Spring Break is here which means no classes for me. Awww.......

Joe....18 on the mill.  It would be soooo easy for me to just hop off at, say, 6 miles.   I'm gonna do one more 20 next Sunday.  The it's all downhill.  So what race are you running?   "I pity the fool"......I love that!

Arla....glad you got your legs back.  Hope you get feeling better real soon.

Hey Jewels....don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better.

                Trails are hard!

I'm going to cheat even further and copy the one from the daily.  Not that you guys don't deserve a brand new one, I just feel that I can't improve on the first version   Small progress, I guess.  I was planning on a half today, but I think that will come in June.

                  posted: 3/28/2010 at 1:42 PM

I'm going to sneak in and cheat with  small RR in the daily.  But this was a last minute decision, as in "If I wake up and my hamstring doesn't feel TOO tight, I think I might go down to Cambridge and run this race"  This was the Cambridge City Run for 5 miles.  When I saw late yesterday that Henry and Marj were going , that pretty much made up my mind.

There were well over a 1000 runners and walkers, so I didn't hold out great hopes of finding Henry and Marj without a pre-arranged meeting, but as I was walking out with my bib, Henry was coming in.  It is always so delightful to have a chance to chat with them.  As an added bonus, Mary T (who I think used to post here) stopped by to say Hi.  I felt almost like Tselbs at his races, although I think the percentages of people that he knows at his races is JUST a bit higher.

I ended up at the very back of the pack by stopping to chat with a couple of ladies with a Golden.  As we were ambling towards the line, the gun went off, so it actually worked out nicely, as the initial crush had dissipated and I could run right from the start.  The actual starting line wasn't marked so I think I miss by just a hair, as Garmin had me at 4.99 miles at the finish.  Don't think I ran the tangents that efficiently.

I had only two goals for this--I wanted to go 5 miles without anything hurting and stay under 10 minutes for the whole thing.  I managed both amazingly enough--with no sore hammy OR shin, and a Garmin finish time of 49:17.  So even if I cheated a little on the distance, I think I would still have made it.  Gun time was about 50:30, so I was a little behind at the start.  It is sort of fun to run from the back, though--you get to pass more people that way.

An unexpected benefit was a woman giving free 10 minute massages afterwards.  I had her work on my tight hamstring and it feels REALLY good at the moment.  But she made me almost levitate off the table when she found a couple of the tight spots.

I channeled my inner Ribs while dressing for this race.  My usual ensembles look like an explosion in a laundry basket.  Today was gold hat and long sleeve shirt and black shorts to go with my gold and black Brooks.  Now that I can dress like a real runner, I may have to start running like one.

A very pleasant way to spend the morning.  Hope everyone else's races and runs are as nice.

Glad you got your 10 in, Leslie.  Now you're on taper?

Jewels--that was my first thought about Arla and Mexico, too.  I know the feeling.  Hope your's is all gone by the time you travel.

Ev--a little less character building run today, but a very nice 20 nonetheless.  Be honest, was it a jump or a climb?  you know that Les would have leapt over (and then come back to toss it out of the way )

Joe--Thanks for noticing.  I like the month summary--it really makes me feel like I'm accomplishing a lot.  Your runs on the TM continue to impress.  I'm getting a little more used to it, but I've got a LONG way to go to get to your level.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

Ev--  Be honest, was it a jump or a climb?

It was more like  come to a complete stop and evr so carefully step ovr the tree.  This far into M training I try and minimize my risk of injury.  With my clumsiness and lack of coordination, I need all the help I can get!  I have no  wish I had more kahoonas.

Sorry....I didn't see your RR ovr on the dailies.  I try to scan the daily daily but sometimes miss it.

Good racing!  It is fun to pass people.

Missed the Kings Park 15K due to the big storm which caused serious damage in my north shore Long Island neighborhood. To make up for it I entered the Suffolk County Half Marathon yesterday 3/28. It was my first Half but I really enjoyed it and finished in 1:55:31 with a bit left in the tank. Next is Long Island Half in May with a 5 mile race in mid -April as a warm up.

Congratulations on a most excellent race, Stumpy!!  Loved the reference to an explosion in a laundry basket.

Arla - I guess we all had the same thought re you being sick / Mexico.  Well, if you have to recover somewhere, Mexico's not a bad choice, I guess.

Joe - It never ceases to amaze me that you can go that long on a treadmill.  BIG BA points.

Ev - Good going on the 20.  My agility level is less than desirable.  Unless it's a little itty bitty twig laying neatly on the ground, I keep my leaping to a minimum.  As far as chewing trees up and spitting them out - I don't really care for the splinters I get in my gums.

Jewels - Did you ever get a definitive answer for your knee?  I think the last time it was mentioned, you were going for an MRI.  And yeah, it looks like I've found the ticket for keeping the nausea at bay.  Now we'll have to see how long I can eat turkey/avo sandwiches and chicken noodle soup before I start begging for something new.

Tipp - Sorry, but that is a miserable excuse for an RR.  Delete and try, try again.  And don't forget the Fashion Report.  Refusal to comply with the Fashion Report requirement automatically drops to you a C-.  Or possibly a D.

Cindy - How is poor Mairead doing?

Rest day for me, as much as I could rest with the zoo around.  If I'd been smart enough, I would've just gotten up, fed 'em, and gotten it over with.  Instead, I  kept trying to stuff Wilson under the covers the shut him up.  Worked the first two times, then I had to kick him outside.  Then there was a hissing event on the bed.  Then, then, then.  I finally dragged myself out of bed around 6:30.

Was looking at my schedule for this next week and thought WTH??  I'm suppose to be tapering!  Got to work and Coach had sent me a new one.  Whew!  Much, much better.

                          Have a great week ~

Ev- my marathon is on April 17th. It's the Jersey Shore Relay Marathon and if you are a team of one, you get into the "IronMan" division. Weeha, that sounds tough. It runs from the town of Seaside along the ocean and goes straight north to the town of Asbury Park. I have never done a straight line, no return race so this will be a little different. The course however, goes over a lot of the boardwalk I frequent and know like the back of my hand. I just hope that we don't get a nor'easter that day, in which case it will be all against the wind. Yikes!

Bleck on the wind.  Here's hoping it's a gorgeously cool, wonderfully overcast, no wind, no heat day!

FYI - Watched a program last night on PBS re the eminent domain issue in Asbury Park.  Don't know how old it was, but it was really uplifting.
