Coastwalker plows through 5.5 miles amid flurries.

Tom White gets us all caught up on reading, knocks out a pool run then celebrates his gifts and talents.

Dave59 is stepping up in recovery. Keep plugging away.

RunnerKSA makes a 6 mile fashion statement. She weighs her options at the gym and gets right-side out.

it’s nice to just relax at home on a weekday.

I don't know what that means.

Joe618 also gets us educated as he enjoys a rest day.

    Tammy gets in a pre-Friday.

Henrun stays fit and active. He's planned on staying up past his bed time. Just the thought of that fills me with dread.

Evanflein eases up on meetings. Whew.

Jlynne heads out for 5.67 miles, gets herself beat up at the Y.....and.... wait for it.....wears a uniform and has candy!!! All she needs is a white panel van and she'll be the perfect woman.

Falconfixer dodges the rain with 6. Tips on smoking a turkey, regardless of which end you light and which end you inhale from, make sure the bird is at least unconscious. Turkeys don't just sit still for that. My go to brine is salt, brown sugar, peach juice, amaretto along with the first 7 herbs and spices in the cupboard. I bough a bag of peach wood chips. Sometimes I'll use pecan. When I smoke pork, it's usually apple or cherry or mesquite or hickory.

Runr_nut gives himself a one way trip to the mechanic then runs home for 5 miles.

Avenger Doggie gets himself grounded for the rest of the week.

    Spacityrunner has a magical 5.

TwoCat also compromises with his DW. He may starve before Thursday. Thanks for stopping in. We've become fond of you.

Tetsujin209 has a plethora of eye candy as well as 3.7 up a mountain. He's penciled himself in for a repeat. The dog and I would love it.

    Steve/Two-cat: Why brine turkeys?

Most fish are brine-soaked in holding tanks nowadays while they await unloading

and freezing but why add salt to a turkey that has so much added to it during cooking

and doesn't seem to need any more salt and, since the turkeys are probably frozen

within minutes, wouldn't seem to need any preservative between taking and freezing?

    .

It keeps the birds moist while while cooking. Don't ask the science about that, I've tried it with out and it dries out fast.

I pounded out three hard miles on the treadmill before work. I had 6300+ steps before I left the house. 7300 by the time I got to work and boom!!! Zero. meh. I simply use the gear as a motivator. I could easily bury myself in paperwork between trucks.

When I got home, I did prep work for carpet, laminate and tile flooring removal before I put the next greatest thing ever down. I put laminate down ten years ago. DW had some affordable carpet out in about for years ago when I visited Dad for Christmas. The installer damaged  the laminate transition pieces, some of the tile and DW hated the carpet quickly. If a commissioned sales person tried to talk you out of a sale that will hit them in the pocket book...listen.

If possible, do a background check on your installer. The old boy started call DW when he got a buzz on. Some of our customers at work are self employed because the don't have to worry about drug testing or background checks.

Thanks for starting us off, Steve. I wonder how drug testing for jobs will go once our "legal weed" is available. Making it legal still doesn't make it acceptable for one's employment!

Just wanted to record a run here that I forgot to post on Sunday. Did a run-walk with a small group on the 6-mile loop around the lake with an overall pace of around 13 minutes or so. I've also been doing some workouts on the bike trainer, which is a good way to get some aerobic exercise in when it's too nasty outside to run (such as today!).

From the department of aging: I needed three things from the basement to do yesterday's dinner prep. It took me four trips down and up the stairs -- a new record...

        Mornin' everyone.

Hi Steve! Bummer about all the flooring that has to come out.

Good question, Doug, about the impact of legal weed on drug testing. I think you're right - probably the same impact as someone with too much alcohol in their system. Good job of getting your extra steps in on the basement stairs.

Welcome back, Twocat. I guess there are many ways to smoke (or sudo-smoke) a turkey.

I went 6.2 miles in 34° temps with a constant light rain. With little wind, it wasn't so bad out. I mixed in some racewalkng on the flats to test my hamstring, and it did OK. But I'm still going to take it easy for a few more days.

        Have a greta Tuesday.

        Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Good morning fellas and those yet to post. Thank you for the recap Steve, and nice to get those steps in before work. Sorry about the carpet/laminate thing. Always a pain in the a#%

Hi Doug! Good to see your post.

Hey Twocat - don't be such a stranger. Did you put Dijon mustard on that air sandwich?

Beautiful pictures Tet. You're very luck to have views like that.

34° and light rain? You were brave to tough out all those miles Jay. Half of getting out there in the dark on cold, rainy mornings is your mental approach. Nice job today!

5.76 miles for me this morning, 20°  Finished up with 20 minutes of stretching and core. Off to start Thanksgiving prep stuff. Have a great day everyone.

just speaking of what I know in Oregon where medical and now recreational use is legal, is that the drug testing and rules regarding MJ usage can vary by company. Some companies are fine with medical use and even recreational use so long as you are not showing up to work high. Other companies, like one of our largest employers in Grants Pass (Fire Mountain Gems) have a zero tolerance policy and conduct random UA's on employees as well. Since THC can remain in your system for 30-45 days, you better not care much if you get let go from your job if you use, even sporadically, and your test is positive. Even medical usage, with doctors verification, is not allowed. A good friend who is a management level analyst with FMG would benefit from medical use because of severe back pain she gets at times that debilitates her, but she's getting close to retirement and cannot risk losing her job, so she has to use prescription narcotics at times to survive the pain. Makes no sense to me but companies can make their own rules.

Today is my Friday. Super busy day, plus I'm leaving work a bit early to help get a dog at the shelter transitioned into his new foster home. He's a pit mix that has a severe skin condition we are treating and being in a home is what is best for him, so I found a foster for him yesterday and he'll even get to go on a road trip with her to the Bay Area where she'll spend Thanksgiving with her family. "King" will feel like he hit the jackpot. Unfortunately, it's just a two week arrangement while he's getting meds for his skin issues, then he'll become adoptable but some family will sure be lucky to get him and hopefully he'll have a home by Christmas

And after all that is done, I'll head to the gym and run the TM for a bit

              Howdy folks!

Super busy at work, trying to to a full week of work in a short week.

I got in 4 miles on the TM this morning.  Foot still hurt.  The PT guy had to move my appt and now I don't see him until the 30th, losing me even more time and fitness.    Oh well.  I will continue to do the Google-inspired PT exercises and hopefully they will do some good.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Thanks, Steve.  Boo on the flooring.

2.3 treadmill miles before work with my still present sinus infection.  Mornings and evenings are the worst with it.   Got something in at least.  2.2 treadmill miles after work (left early), so 4.5 for the day.

Doug- I can answer that question since I do a lot of employment legal work and go to a lot of conferences where pot and drug testing is a big topic.  Many companies have eliminated drug testing pre-employment- especially hospitality (hotels/restaurants) and retail.  It's too hard to get a workforce.  Employers still have a right to have a drug free workplace and a number of companies (especially manufacturing and distribution centers) DO drug test pre-employment and most still screen for pot.  Only in a few states can you NOT bump even for medical marijuana.  Other employers have removed pot from the drug panel but screen for other drugs.   You still have the right to send someone home or terminate for being high on the job, of course.   We stopped pre-employment drug testing a few years ago (we are a national retail chain with 58000 employees) at our stores and corporate office (against my legal advice) but still test at our distribution centers.  We do have a DC in Maryland and you have to treat medical marijuana the same way you would treat another illness/disability and engage in the interactive process, which is odd since it is the "treatment" and not the disease itself.

                Dave59

My calf is sore today so I'm unsure how far I will walk.  Probably overdid it yesterday.

The way I look at it, companies got it backwards.  I offer my services and if they want them, good, if not, I'll go somewhere else.  And unless my job involves public safety they better not ask for a random drug test (unless I am showing something is wrong with my work or my people interaction.) I am not their indentured servant and I can go somewhere else if they do that.

The change in the attitude of companies over my 37 years has been remarkable. There used to be "personnel departments" and people worked at the company.  Now it is "human resource departments" and it just resources they manage.  Rules upon rules keep getting added.

Benefits used to be a way to lure people to your company.  Now they act like it is a favor they are providing.

Well, I for one, am not participating in this de-personalization of the workforce. I choose them and provide them with value. When that stops, I'll stroll out to pasture, but I will not pee in a cup for them.

Hey All - I've been out of the loop since Friday and don't have time to catch up right now, but since you all have been part of my 2+ year long butt saga, I thought I'd let you know about my doc appt in San Jose yesterday.

I think I've found a new ortho, even though he's 6 hrs away. The appointment went well. He spent about 30 min with us the first time. He looked at the MRI I had done here and said it was horrible and I told him, "Welcome to Humboldt County health care."

Anyway, I was able to get a new MRI yesterday at noon and then we went back to his office around 2:00. The MRI showed inflammation around the upper hamstring and, to his surprise, around the periformis. And although it didn't specifically show it, he thinks I have a tear in my hamstring based on my reaction to the spots he was poking at.

Given the tear wasn't obvious, he gave me a cortisone shot in the upper hamstring and I'm supposed to get back to him on Monday and let him know if there's a difference. He also wanted me to have a cortisone shot in the area of the periformis where there's inflammation, but he doesn't do that, the doc who does that wasn't available, and he didn't really want me to have all the shots at one time anyway. If by Monday I'm still having issues, I will be going back down for the shot in the periformis. If both of those don't rectify the issue, then I understood he would lean toward surgery for the tear he thinks is present. Surgery would fix the tear and clean up any built up crap that is inhibiting the healing process.

We talked about the PRP injections, and he gave us a much clearer picture of how it works. First, there's about a 50/50 chance of the injection working. If it doesn't the first time, he doesn't try again. Between the injection and the surgery, he said surgery would have a much better chance of fixing everything. I told him I wanted to do whatever would have the best chance of getting me back to running and he said it would be surgery.

Surgery is a 3+ month recovery process with about 4 wks on crutches / no weight on the right side at all.

He was very thorough and very kind. Between being nervous and hopeful about finally getting an answer and having a doctor actually listen to me, when he left the room I broke down in tears. The medical assistant who was setting up the MRI appt said she's worked there for 15 years and drives over an hour every day because they are very caring about their patients. It was definitely evident. And it helped having Shorty there to ask questions, etc.

So although it sort of feels like "wait and see," I think I'm on the right track and found the right doc.

Well, I came back to 130 emails so I gotta get through them.  Later ~~

I know, right?  One way?  Do you stay overnight?  It's a darn shame you have to go so far to get (finally) decent medical care.

He sounds wonderful, Leslie, but 6 hours away seems pretty daunting.

We are very limited on medical specialists around here, especially sports medicine.  People are going to Santa Rosa (4 hrs away) for knee replacements and Arizona for back surgery because we are so limited.  Six hrs (one way) is daunting, but it's worth it to find the right person.

We drove down Sunday but drove back yesterday after the appointments.  It was a very long day.  The long drive is also one of the reasons I am leaning more toward just getting the surgery done instead of making multiple trips down to see if this shot or that shot will work, especially since he's is convinced there's a tear regardless of what the MRI says.  It'll be something to discuss with his office when I call Monday with an update.
