Masters Running

Mahvelous Monday 05/23/22 (Read 41 times)

Good morning Masters. It's an absolutely beautiful day here, though a little chilly with 45 degrees and clear blue skies. A perfect morning for being outside though. Too cold for bugs yet, and no wind!

Leslie - I'm so sorry to read about Kate's passing. From your posts, you were as close as sisters. Thinking about you in the difficult days ahead.

RCG - your description of your run yesterday sounded so pretty. And don't we love our grandkids?

We just got back from a weekend in Chicago. We went to meet up with our daughter who lives in Seattle and our oldest grandson (turning 16 next month), who we don't get to see nearly enough. Had awesome tickets to a Cubs game that was rain delayed for over two hours but made the best of it and had fun anyway.

Twocat - you're having way too many problems with your electronic gadgets lately!

Nice to see a TomW post!

    When is Tramps due back?

Holly - hope the job continues to go well!

7.1 miles this morning with 20 minutes of core and stretching.

Hope your week is off to a good start!

thanks jylnne//...........I'm still working-out (of course)

Here I am at LaGuardia for part one of my day in America's airports. As of now my flight to DC looks to be on time. Of course, then all I get to do is spend 10 plus hours in the DC airport before my next flight. I suppose this is better than being in prison. It is also better than undergoing surgery. It is also better than . . .

After the second nice day of the year into the seventies, cloudy for the next two days before a Memorial Day weekend of regular weather by which time all the yard work should be done, if ever.

Twocat - why not put your stuff in a locker or temporary airport storage and take a bus or something, rent a car, etc and enjoy WDC with DW as, when possible and travel time permitting, I used to do on travel to Japan, especially taking the long routes through Honolulu, Taipei, Seoul, etc.  In addition to costumed, cultural parades for layover passengers in the concourses, Incheon in Seoul offered a half dozen or so free bus tours to downtown, temples, mountain vistas, etc. Have fun!

            Good morning, Masters.

Beautiful day here in Albany.  Got out for a 10:00 walk with a co-worker, probably covered exactly a mile.  I should check out the route on the App.  I spent the weekend mowing, weeding, trimming lilacs, transplanting some lilacs to make a new hedge between our house and the neighbors (no reason), and otherwise soaking in the 90+ degree weather.  I'll take it.

This morning's swim was my attempt to get back in a morning swim routine, but with a twist.  I am pretty out of condition, and my right shoulder is barking a lot from that ill-fated attempt to begin breathing from my right side (not just left).  I think if I'm going to do that, it needs to be in concert with a visit to a Physical Therapist.  I can work on that in July or something.   This is due to an old incomplete tear of a rotator cuff tendon, about 10 years ago.  "Normal swimming" doesn't effect my shoulder.

            I swam a total of 1,500 yards today.  Warmup was 1000 yards (300 free, 200 flutter kick with kickboard, 2 x 100 IM, 2 x 100 backstroke, 2 x 50 dolphin kick on back), then 5 x 50 yard freestyle repeats in 40 seconds each and 5 x 50 yard backstroke repeats in 47 seconds each.

            Overposting:

I think it will be interesting to see how this turns out.  In 2019, I swam my first ever Empire State Senior Games, and I had no access to a swimming pools from mid-May through mid-June, so I competed after a one-month+ layoff.   This year, I trained very hard from February through April and have hardly swum in May.  I think I can get myself back into condition by June 18, the day of this year's races.  I entered 6 races and they are all only 50 or 100 yards long - all sprints.  I started working on flip turns this morning and included them in each 50 yard repeat.  Like everything else this morning, they were very clunky.

            Have a great day, Masters.

              Hi Masters.

Thanks for the start, Jlynne. Sounds like you had a great weekend in Chicago.

Hi Tomwhite. Good to hear from you, however briefly. Your friend is lucky to have you on his side.

Good luck with the flights, Twocat.

Good return to the pool, BTY. Starting up any physical activity after even after short layoff almost always feels clunky. But it'll pass fast.

I'm so sorry to learn of Kate's passing, Leslie. Knowing it was coming doesn't make it any easier. Let those fantastic memories and great photos help carry you through.

Holly may be running again? Great!

We had a great time yesterday with our friends who were visiting Maine for a granddaughter's college graduation. They rented a house on the edge of a beautiful salt marsh in Scarborouh, ME, and we spent most of our time with them in the back yard.

Got in my 1.6 EZ miles this morning, one week after the toe break. Keeping moving forward.

              Have a greta Monday.

Taking a break from packing to pop in!!

Leslie - so sorry to hear about Kate's passing. Holding all of you in prayer.

Jay - you were in Scarborough while I was in OOB just a stone's throw away!! Lovely isn't it!!

I had a couple of nice runs while up in Maine. Ran (with a little walking) the Eastern Trail for 6.2 miles on Saturday with a friend who just moved up there and walked Scarborough beach 3 miles with a different friend that same morning. Today ran 6.2 miles from the campground to the Pier and back with some walking after for a cool-down.

Now at the apartment trying to get this packing finished before Wednesday. Have to work tomorrow so want to get as much as possible done today. We are turning in the apt keys on Thursday so we do have some time after the movers do our big stuff Wednesday to come back and finish up if we need.

Thanks, Jeanne!   I ran from the condo into "town" and it is not a mentally easy run.  You have to wind around the visitor center property and through some parking lots to get any kind of mileage.  I eked out 5.1 miles.  I think it will be back to the Westin tomorrow.  I got in further trouble at the Westin last night when we took our daughter/son in law over there for their kayak evening.  They have glass kayaks (well, plexiglass) and lights that attract the fish, so it's pretty cool.  Well, I didn't realize (and I should have with all my poaching on their property) that it was a golf carts only property and no vehicles were allowed.  I drove right up to the beach area to let them out and was corrected and led out with my jeep by one of the Westin property staff!  Oh well.  We didn't see any signs.

Good day today at the beach and we're going to a bar high up on the hills to watch sunset.

BTY- I would give up on the bilateral breathing.  You've been doing fine without it.

Made it down to NJ for this project to find that schedule has changed yet again   Last week the utility said there was no way the power was going on until next week.  We went "that sort of sucks" and made alternative plans.  Today, after 4 hours without looking at emails on the drive down, the power is probably going on tomorrow morning.  As I told one of the guys waiting for it, I'll believe it when I see someone in a bucket at the pole.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

                        Howdy folks.

Twocat - good luck on your long travels!

We lost power last night about 10pm when a car apparently crashed into a telephone pole on the next block, knocking it down and cutting the power of about 2,000 residents.  I got ready for work by candle light, and then left for work early so I could hit the grocery store for a frozen meal for lunch (DH and I both had nice packed lunches in the fridge, but of course couldn't open the door with the power out) and then went into work early so I could have some coffee before I did untold damage to the world.

The power came back on in the early afternoon, according to DD, and we didn't seem to lose anything, although I did throw out some items in the fridge that may have been questionable.

At any rate, no workout for me today.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Hey y'all, fairly brief post.  Lots of travel lately; spent last week in Denver.  I was the "Action/Admin Officer" (AO) for the Generals that were scoring/vectoring all the colonels in 4 career fields (including mine) so aircraft maintainers (me), logistics officers, engineers and security forces.  Great experience for me actually.  Was literally the fly on the wall including when they were talking about me.  Which was the reason I'm now the AO.  The previous one, one of my former bosses, retired last year so I'm now the oldest, and apparently trusted, non-promotable (I'm too old to be a general now) colonel.  Luckily I've done a ton of facilitating, including processes where I'm the junior person in the room.  So I had to keep things moving with 8 people who all outrank me.  Many are long time friends and they all know that is the role of the AO so it went pretty well.  So a decent week overall.

Today I lost the thread.  Got my teeth cleaned (no follow on stuff required) then was able to get in to the optometrist.  Typical exam, including dilation.  Script hasn't changed too much in three years.  I have a freckle on the back of my left eye so they check to make sure no size/shape changes.  It hadn't...but they saw a horseshoe shaped tear; apparently a sign of a tearing retina.  Couldn't get in to the specialist in town, so DW and I went to Huntsville.  The specialist confirmed the tear then lasered it right there (after getting dilated again).  Never had that done before (thankfully) and I'm not in a hurry to do it again.  Dilation is pretty much worn off and some naproxen took care of the soreness.  Am glad it was resolved so quickly.  So not a whole lot of anything else to report beyond a lot of driving.

Leslie, my deepest condolences about Kate.  Will be praying for all of you.

                          BTY, Good luck!

                          Have a gr8 night everyone!

Leslie - I'm very sorry about Kate. Thanks for sharing the pictures and memories.

I'm in New Orleans at a technical conference. I started the day with a 2.59 mile 5k sponsored by the conference. The organizer said it was close to a 5k if you counted the walk from the hotel to the river and back. It was a fun time even though it was 75° and 100% humidity.

Then 8 different training sessions. Lots of good stuff. Good timing on training as IBM has just released a significant OS upgrade and a new product called Merlin for application development. A few sessions I was in today were done by the IBM architects of the system. So we got it straight from the source.

Work had been so tiring this year that even sitting through 8 hours of training feels like a vacation.

GD#1 was over so we could drop her off at school.  I got a call from a cherished cousin.  His sister, also my cousin, passed away early Monday AM.  It was a challenge to process while a 7 year old was in need of her normal attention. She as battling breast cancer and early into sobriety.  She had been in and out of ICU for something undiagnosed.

I worked a spaghetti dinner benefit with the Knights of Columbus after work.  It was good to keep my head occupied.

Steve, I'm so sorry about your cousin and the loss for your family.  I understand how difficult it must have been to get that news while you were taking care of your GD.
