Interesting discussion today about happiness. I could add my professional opinion but I won't since I retired so I could run more and prolong my own happiness. But I can relate to Enke's comments.

I ran 3.2 very slow miles in the sun today as my knee improves.

And this ^^^ makes me very happy! Smile

First day of spring, huh? Hard to tell, really. We might get a little snow on Wednesday, but otherwise it looks like we'll warm up a bit this week. March can't be over soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

So I ran a little over 20 miles last week. That also makes me happy! I told the administrators of the 2017 in 2017 game that I can come off the "Injured Reserve" list this week, so now it's time to start rebuilding some mileage. I can't believe how fast my running fitness faded away and that it's been almost a month since the Phoenix marathon!

Pool running today. While I appreciate the therapeutic benefits of this activity, I will be glad to no longer have it in my weekly plans.

ETA: 31 minutes of pool running, which is 10 laps from the deep end, down the length to the 55 foot marker, then back. Takes me about 3 minutes a lap and I do circles at the deep end to finish on a full minute, hence the 31 minutes. Just thought you all would be interested to hear all that.

Anyone watching Planet Earth II on BBC America?  I love that show.  I just took a break from work to watch a few minutes and saw billions of locusts devour a countryside. I'm a couple episodes behind because of the recent vacation.

          Running-in-the-rain

After almost a dozen races since last July,

yesterday's half marathon was the first time

in eight months that it wasn't raining for one of 'em.

          .

ps - why is solstice on 3/20?

why wasn't the first day of spring in Seattle on March 16

when day-and-night were only one minute apart instead

of today when they're nine minutes apart?

Maybe because of the artificiality of where a city

is positioned in its respective time zone . . . ?

          date. . . . .  sunrise . . . . .sunset . . gap

          3/16 . . . . . . 7:17 . . . . . . . 7:18 . . one minute

          3/20 . . . . . . 7:11 . . . . . . . 7:20 . . nine minutes

            Today's discussion is quite philosophical.

Happiness is tough to define. I suppose it depends on what is measured. But what makes one person happy may not make another happy. Subjective.

That's the extent of my input but I wish everyone happiness.

Today I was happy I ran with hubby. In the middle of it he needed to stop due to a health issue and I am happy we stopped. 5 miles.

              Hello everybody!

Just popping in to say I ran 10 miles with 6 x 1 mile "strength" sets with 1/4 mile recoveries between each.  The times were good but, again, the effort to hit those times was way to much.

Oh--and I'm not even close to being smart enough to follow along with the discussion between Tramps and Twocat.  But, I consider myself a happy person but, I am not happy with the way my life is going at the present time.  I have faith that it will improve, however.

              Okay--gotta go.  See ya!

Happy 1st Day of Spring!!  Busy weekend here with the grandbabies, birthday parties, bridal shower, but I did get in 1 pain free mile on the treadmill Sat. which makes me happy!! Hoping to try another run tomorrow!!

Jay - I too thank you for all the recaps!! It really helps me when I feel so behind in the daily!!

The start of Spring is when the equator passes through the plane of the Sun.

In Astronomy terms it literally is an instant in time.

As for the days being longer than 12 hours, well the center of the sun rising to the center of the sun setting is 12 hours, but the sun isn't a point source (and due to refraction can actually be seen below the true horizon anyway).

Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Happiness isn't a destination, but a journey. How many people equate it to the endorphin rush when find a dollar in a park, hit a new PR, win at a casino, see a FB post get 60 "likes", have a beer, inject a needle, flirt....etc? It's easy for happiness to be equated to chasing pleasure. IMHO, happiness isn't always being in a good mood. It's having a sense of security. Knowing that you can find the calm in any storm. It's in having some healthy goals to look forward to. It's respecting the person in the mirror. Keep it simple.
