A late post of yesterday's run: 3 miles on the creek path down in Golden with DD, after a full day of errands. It was IRC (mid-50's) and delightful to run with DD. She's been doing the C25K entirely at the rec center indoor track, because running outside at home is so hilly and snowy. But I talked her into running on a flat trail in town with me, and it was fun! It's snowing lightly now - very pretty! I'll take the dogs out a bit later.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Welcome to 2009 everybody. I know I am a few days late here with that. But as an old friend of mine, who I have not seen in probably 25 years Black eye, used to say, "Better a little late than a big behind." Big grin jules2 Good luck with tomorrow's race. Also, remember no running on the lake without permission! Hey! Highlighting a word and hitting a formatting button no longer wraps the word in HTML tags! Put it back! Angry nonoruns need cleats! But I see you got in 6 slippery miles anyway. Good job. anachrotech well 2 on the TM seems like 20. Dead perchcreek too bad you did not have a camera with you! Sarge pretty chilly 10K with DW. mainerunnah always helps to run with a group, especially this time of the year. Why is it almost as "warm" up where you are as were I am? Confused Holly S. Be careful what you say! If House were handling this he would first misdiagnose you three times. Each time he would give you some treatment that would then nearly kill you. Then on the fourth attempt you would likely be cured or once or twice a year killed off! I hope your toe proves way less eventful. Big grin Nice long run. BTW international long run day is tomorrow I believe so you are a day early. henrun good luck with tomorrow's long run. JVol44 good luck with the come back. I can really sympathize. SLO_HAND Happy Day Early Bday to your DD! Nice discipline on your training routine. wildchild sounds like a great run with your DD! How come you are in CO and it is warmer than here in CT! Not fair! Cool Mariposai not only a great 13 miler yesterday, but great pics too! The cross country skiing looks beautiful! I would be totally jealous but I am not really a big fan of cross country skiing. Clowning around But I have several friends who are and would love to have been out where you are. Walt.RB well if 2 TM miles are like 20 then 5.3 would be like . . . Dead evryday nice easy six yesterday. Good reason not to take fish oil! Yech! stumpy77 well real life will not be great but what can you do? Have to go produce stuff! Hmm, a 13° run? Maybe the TM is not so bad . . . Wink evanflein happy New Year to the most dedicated cold weather, TM runner I know. So there is a temperature at which you will run indoors! Big grin Mariposai nice 13 miler. The homemade chowder sounds great too! I bought some clams last night that I plan to cook tonight. This will be the first time in my life I have ever tried to make fresh clams. Hope I live to report back how it goes! jdmom3 I must admit to having gone back and forth on the glucosamine/chondritin as various studies come out. I think the latest (current) consensus is that it does not do anything a placebo will not. A web page you can check for new reports is Quackwatch.org. They are reasonably good at putting medical research into English. I think they tend to be a bit too deferential to unproven stuff but it is a small matter. Nice speedwork by the way. TammyinGP and fatozzig today we start undecorating. Long tough job! eliz4015 nothing like a snow run. I did one last week. Not a lot of fun actually. Spareribs I have not checked in recently so I hope you are doing well. I want to wish you an especially healthy 2009 after all you have gone through. biketm you too get an extra wishing of health this coming year! Twocat today I ran with my DW and the local jogging club. We went for 4 miles as I have convinced her to run a local 10K race tomorrow. It is the first in a series of races around here called the Boston Buildup. I must admit I am quite depressed about that. Today my leg felt better than it has in some time and my DW said I looked better while running. But we were going very slow. Still, better is better. My fear, not unreasonable, is that I am going to be told by the doctor they cannot find an muscle infection and to knock off running for two months. If that happens then I will have to miss Boston yet again and requalify to boot. Sigh. Even now I am wondering if I should cancel Boston. I cannot really "run" as yet and that means no tempo work or speed work for the foreseeable future. Not the ideal way to train! So what is wrong with my leg . . . my DW watched me do a pickup yesterday and said the problem is my left leg is not being pulled back, I am just dragging it back. She said it look sort of like I was running with some odd peg leg. So off I went to the Internet to see what sort of problem makes it tough to pull your leg back after extending it. No luck. What I did find seemed to come with a host of other symptoms, none of which I appear to have. Any ideas folks?

Hi Everyone, Haven't had time to back-read the dailies but hope to soon. 10 miles for me yesterday doing the Boxing Day run in reverse. After several days off and a few pounds heavier it was slow going and my calf is super tight now. I am still not happy trudging through this snow and wind carp but getting more used to it. 4 miles today, sunny, still below freezing... can't wait to get back to the mild PNW weather. I am still planning on doing that 10 miler in the cold dark forest next weekend. Soon off with the kids to play on the giant snow mountains made from the plows. Holly, glad the toe finally exploded!

Thanks twocat. My "study" on glucosamine/chondroitin is that when I take it my knees don't hurt and when I don't take it they do. "Once a Runner" is not a very well-written book, but because it's about running and it has a decent story line, many people are crazy about it. SkipAZ gave a copy of it to my son Prime Rib some years ago and we value it. Last year the Saint found another copy of it in a half-price bookstore and bought it, then sold it on eBay for about 50 bucks. I'm resting that sore right-butt muscle. Did a full core workout at the Y today followed by a 4-mile walk. Will jog some tomorrow. It's very warm here, high 70's and sunny. Spareribs

Ribs... thanks! that will be helpful.. and yes, good news that I can do the other things on the same day. I'll replace an off day with this, a good way to up my mileage a little. srl, how's Tobias? Carolyn, Evryday, Smile. nice runs everybody. rest day. washed floors. happy weekend.

wanna a recipe? email me and it is yours. I love both Xcountry skiing and downhill. Right now we are doing Xcountry since we don't have enough snow to open our local hill Smile Just when I got myself a new red suit for downhill. just 2 miles this morning in 4f. Off to do some more skiing in just a bit. I think I will wait for the weather to warm up a bit more.

Good afternoon folks, {{{Hollys Toe}}} {{{SR's Butt}}} Slept this morning and just got back from work. No run for me as I ran three 10+ milers in the past three days and didn't want to push it....time to rest. Did my 40 for the week. Out for some shopping later at Trader Joe's and some yard work...hopefully will get my LR in tomorrow if we don't get too much rain in the AM.

                  Upcoming Races:

                  Boston Marathon, Boston,MA 04/15/13
                  Grandfather Mountain Marathon,Boone NC 07/14/13
Thunder Road Marathon, Charlotte NC 11/13

Holly - Take care of that toe, girlfriend! Twocats - Would an orthopedist be someone to talk to? If your leg isn't being pulled back all the way, sounds like it might be starting in the low back, maybe, then running down through your butt (?). Do you know of anyone around there who does Muscle Activation Therapy (MAT)? There are two people here locally who are personal trainers and certified MAT specialists. It's a very different type of "physical therapy," if you want to categorized it. Very low key and does amazing things. Look it up on the Internet. It did wonders for my knee and my hip flexor problem. If you look it up on the 'net and still have questions, you can email me at fatozzig at yahoo dot com. Since I'm not running for a few days, I slept in, as well, and finally dragged myself out of bed around 9:15. Good thing I did, too, 'cause my dad showed up about half an hour later. Even though he lives only 1/2 an hour away, we don't get to see each other often because of his work schedule (graveyard). Beautiful day today, but I didn't know it was gonna get so cold last night and I didn't get some of my more delicate plants covered up. I have a feeling I'll be doing some replanting come spring. Undecided Have a good one, folks!

RE: the glucosamine/chondroitin thing... I'd thought the latest was that it really didn't do much to help severe knee arthritis. However, most people take it to ward off beginning arthritis, or to maintain the cartilage they have. I take it for my hip, and I'm not sure studies have been done on that. But I do know it helps dogs tremendously, gives moderate relief to horses, and is questionable in humans (the only species subject to the placebo effect, I believe). My "experiment of one" has been like Spareribs. When I stopped taking it awhile ago (budget issues), it took about 4-6 weeks for my hip to gradually get pretty bad. Started up on it again and 4-6 weeks later I felt much better. It's not immediate, but I believe it does work. I can't wait to run outside in shorts.

10.13 miles in 2:00:14 for an avg. 11:52 m/m. Sunny, breezy glorious day for running. Cool 43F feels like 38f with 10 mph winds. Splits: 12:20, 12:15, 12:12, 12:04, 11:59, 11:25, 11:26, 10:52, 11:27, 12:37 Gu and water, stop and stretch at 1 hour, gu and water without stopping at 1:45. One potty break at the end of mile 6 (gas station bathroom, door wouldn’t lock, I was scared Shocked). I think if I reduce the coffee consumed the morning of the half I will not have to stop for potty break, I think. My fuel belt holds 16 oz of water (4/4oz bottles)…it was empty at the end. No need to tie anything around my waist, but I was zipping/unzipping. I glance at Mr. garmie once in a while to see miles (so I know when to turn around) or time (for gu), but I rarely try to figure out if I am on pace as I like running by feel. This is just what I wanted to do (well I was thinking a slower pace, but I will take what I get) and I couldn’t be happier. Hi OOOGLLLYYYY….beautiful family Holly, please take care of that toe Mr. Ribs, speedy recovery for your butt Stevie Ray, I do hope that Tobias is doing ok today. Thanks for the great report on your Honolulu marathon. I always enjoy reading your race reports. Good day and good runs everyone

Why is it you only hear this sort of thing from women? (ducking) Dg - yes I did notice...Smile...How'd the trail run go? Twocat - can you have DW take a video of you running and then show it to your sports doc?

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

srlopez, we are very arty and abstracted here sometimes! I hope little Tobias isn't in a funk today {{{Spareribs butt cheek}}} {{Holly's wonky toe}} I ran 19 miles this morning along the beach path. You have to give those surfers credit, year round in any kind of weather they are out there...squirming in and out of wet suits just for me! Blush

Ilene, it would be fun to see those surfers!! DS16 and I went to the Y today. While I ran 6.0 miles on the indoor track (19 laps to a mile), he ran a total of 11 miles, mostly on the TM, a couple on the track. I enjoyed watching him run by me so fast, over and over again! It worked out great - we finished within a couple of minutes of each other (we had decided ahead of time what we were each going to run, so he's almost twice as fast as I am). Have a good weekend, everyone!
