Twosday, June 8 GET UP and RUN!!! (Read 696 times)

Dave59

Just another rest day for me.  It'll probably be a few more days at least before I attempt to run because of my calf problem.  I have the week off to kick back around the house.

When I was at the Crazy Horse Memorial Visitor Center I was looking at some books.  One called "Creator's Code" caught my eye because it was giving some history along with some details on the beliefs of the Lakota tribe (part of the Sioux.)

I didn't know it at first, but the author was near by and he came over and started talking to me.  One thing I love to do is know about people's worldviews.  (I'm not super knowledgeable in philosophy or anything - but I wish I was.)   It is interesting to know what people believe, why, and how does that system answer some basic questions.  So this was great because he started the conversation and I didn't have to do anything.

We talked about a bunch of stuff.  (Actually he did most the talking and I just asked a question here or there.)  I asked him about his concept of evil and his answer was what you might get from Plato (again based on my feeble knowledge of this stuff.)  I told him what it sounded like and showed me that he had a reference to that in the book.  I'm about halfway through the book and he has some good arguments in it.

The author was Ed McGaa or Eagle Man.  He has a law degree from the University of South Dakota and he flew over 100 missions as a Marine pilot in Vietnam.  He was definitely an interesting guy.  He signed my copy and also "drew" his signature in a way that he said people signed things when they didn't know how to write.  He drew an Eagle and a Man's head (for Eagle Man).

    Marathon Maniac #957

Amy, congrats to Dan for a great HM 2 years after his heart surgery, and congrats to you for 1st in AG at the Deadwood marathon!  (I peeked at your log!)

      Yes - great job!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

      I look my best blurry!

Aamos - I am running the Lehigh Valley Marathon in Allentown, PA Sept 12th as my first.  It is supposed to be fast an I really want to BQ.  Then I am running the NYC Marathon in Nov.  I'm so excited!

You all amaze me with your running.  I'm so happy to join you guys.  This is fun.

Aamos, great job on your marathon and I'm really pleased at your husband's nice half.  He's come a long ways back.  jlynne, I hope the treatment and rest (with the exception of the 10K) takes care of your PF.  hopeful, I see a lot of cows on my runs but they're generally behind fences.  While running by a herd of cows on a backroad where there's very little traffic, I've started a few minor stampedes.  Also, I liked the scooter picture yesterday.  Your scooter is sharp but I still like the Super Eagle.

Nice long runs for fatozzig (trails), lame (one on trails and one with H&H), and wannabe.  Good job on the speedwork for hopeful.

This morning, it was in the low to mid 40s and almost calm.  I got in 8 miles in about 1:19:30 for a 9:56 pace.

A good day and good runs for all.

            hi ya'll

Dave59 that book sounds really interesting.   as does the author, how cool you were able to speak with him!

Jeanne, hugs to your foot, & the rest of you.   I was thinking about you particularly this morning while I was running.   Sue too.   a foot day.   : - )

Your doctor really said it won't hurt to do a 10K???     Wonder what Perch will have to say about that.

tw, I haven't been keeping up well lately, & every time I read one of your posts I think, what did I miss!?    this morning for example.      : D     nice swim.

hey how is our friend maggie?

            wannaberunner nice run!

were the geese really on leash?   ;-)    (how I wish!)

Sue I'd like to do Hartford too!

Mary nice run & nice critter pictures.    Did you ever hear anything else about that wild boar?

better get going...   a river run this morning, the plan called for 4 miles easy with 4 8 sec. hill sprints.  I ended up with 4.72 overall, pace on the sprintless part was 10:01, overall max pace was 8:28, so sprint-lite.   Was fun, esp. just doing 4!   I am being very very careful (for me, anyway) this time, it wouldn't hurt if someone would like to remind me of that from time to time.  I'm still being poked from the core work I did Friday.     That should ease up pretty soon I think.

wannaberunner - your enthusiasm is so infectious!!  Unfortunately your speed is not.

Dave, that was a cool story.  I only have one book signed by the auther, it is a cool thing to actually speak to them in person.  And I did attend one book reading by Margaret Atwood (famous Canadian author) many years ago, at an intimate little bookstore/cafe.

Amy congratulations to Dan.  It was one year right?

Jlynne - I think Spareribs dealt with PF for a long time and conquered it, maybe he will pop into your thread.

Gorgeous sunny day but I'm skipping running again.  I was up at 3:30 coughing non-stop for almost 3 hours, then fell asleep for about 45 min before my alarm went off.  And that was on a night I couldn't get to sleep until midnight.  So I need to take it easy....the running will still be there when I get over this cold/cough.  One week off hardly compares to 9 months.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

                ...dg//.........maggie is living on a mountain......very happy

and VERY far away from me.

..nothing takes the place of persistence.....

                I look my best blurry!

wannaberunner - your enthusiasm is so infectious!! ( mta - like a blistering type of infection?) Unfortunately your speed is not. (I'll keep trying to curse you with this.  There is a lot of pressure involved. I just want to warn you. )

Sorry about your crummy cough.  It will pass.

Speed an enthusiasm is thanks to Nobby for me.  He is really inspiring me.  Thanks though.  I feel like a kid again.  My family has had it with my enthusiasm.  They want me to start cooking, cleaning and planting flowers like I used to.    Too bad!  They are just going to have to pitch in.

Your profile pic freaks me out a bit.  I thought you would like to know that.

I have met Tom White and you will be happy to know that he does NOT look like his profile picture.

Opps.....MTA that he does not look like the Avator picture on his profile.   The one when you open his profile....well....that DOES look like him......during his exotic dancer days.

mta - you weren't kidding! EXOTIC!

Another great start by Mary and Pshew on not getting chased by cows!

Wannaberunner---you will rock your marathon no doubt and your enthusiasm is awesome.  I love it! >>> lecture mode on<<  Do take your cell phone though. I don't think you'll need it because you can't make the distance, you are a strong and gifted runner as your times clearly show. A woman running alone should have a phone along is all. I learned that the hard way and was reminded recently after falling hard on the pavement (I was with someone who had a phone and could call for a ride) Just don't want anything bad to happen to you.<<<<lecture mode off>>>>>

Aamos! Excellent news about DanL's half marathon and your chance to run Deadwood. Well done to both of you. I haven't forgotten Stumpy's elderly crack either. I don't get mad, I just get even.

See you in Hartford Sue! I am running the half-marathon. They always do such a great job. I just ran the IronHorse 10k on Sunday and that's also a Hartford Marathon Foundation race. It was great.

Oh yeah, running....9.7 mile fartlek run on the Community Garden/Mill River trails for me at 8:30 this am. Felt peppy and had fun with speedups and charging the hills. Lots of dogs walking their owners, but they all moved out of the way and were quite friendly. Great Dane, a few standard poodles, 1 chocolate lab, 2 black labs, 1 greyhound and I can't remember the rest. I am missing Boogie, our late beagle, acutely these days.

Do exotic dancers wear kinesio tape TW?  could be a good look.

                          TammyinGP

Jlynne, you are too kind - I don't think anyone has ever said "I want to run like Tammy!"

Thanks so much everyone for your kind comments here and on my RR. I think I'm slowly coming down from my marathon high weekend and back to reality.  Still haven't run since Saturday, even though I certainly feel good enough to, but I'll take another rest day and do a short easy run tomorrow sometime probably. Even though I had no soreness after the marathon, I decided to call up my massagehunk and see if he could fit me in anywhere. He had a 9 a.m. slot today so just returned from a wonderful 90 min deep tissue leg massage. well, he certainly found some tight areas - mostly quads and inner thigh area (what's that called? abductors?) and a few glutey spots. Surprisingly, the calves felt great. I thought those would hurt more once he got in there.

and I guess there's no rest for the weary because when I returned to my office I got a call from a local coach here who is doing a week long running camp the end of June for middle and high school kids. I'll be a counselor at the running camp and he asked if I could head up to the mountains next week sometime where the camp is being held to escort some of the various coaches who will be at the camp on a trail run on the Pacific Crest Trail. None of them have run this stretch of the PCT before, so they want to scout it out beforehand. Guess I'll be doing some trail running next week!

I'm glad I had something else running related on my radar not too long after the marathon. I remember after Seattle last year, I hit a running slump and had a hard time finding motivation to get back out there.

                            Tammy

                            evanflein

Yeah, well, Tammy the end result of this marathon is vastly different from Seattle last year. Not that you had a bad race last year (how could you with Aamos as an escort?), but this year you just rocked that course. It really was fun to read about.

CNYrunner, thanks for doing the lecture job on wannaberunner. I was just about to do that. I can't tell you how many times having my phone has been handy if not a downright lifesaver. I take mine on almost anything over a 5 miler because you just never know what might come up. Like hailstorms (oops, didn't have it that time and learned my lesson).

Rest day yesterday. I needed it after that long drive home on Sunday night. It was a really nice drive though. I love driving through Denali Park at midnight in June, with the sun hitting the tops of the mountains, the road clear for miles and all feels right with the world. Getting home at 2 a.m. after a 370 mile drive was a little rough though. I'll RAL today.

                                Hey All -

Aamos - I don't see why the marathon couldn't be considered an LR for your 50k . . . depending on how far out it is.  I'll just throw in my 2 cents and say that for all my 50ks, my longest back-to-backs have been 24/10, a drop down to 10/6, a full week of taper, then the race.

Wannabe - Nice job on your first 2-hr run.

Enke - Hope you're feeling better soon.

It's sticky, icky, moist, and sticky around here.  Weirdest June we've had in the 23 years we've lived here.  I sure would like to see the sun again some day.  Humid, but otherwise IRC this a.m., but I chose to do the stationary bike thing for 30 min, followed by an hour of core/strength.  I was a drippy, sweaty mess by the time it was all said and done.

Okay - back to work.  Later, dudes and dudettes ~
