Masters Running

Sunday May 15th (Read 571 times)

I've been quietly lurking for a bit- might as well start the daily.

I've been doing some really hilly base miles for my long runs recently; today was another one. I missed a turn and wound up going up couple miles longer, and a few hundred feet higher, than planned. 15.75 hilly miles, 2:35.

    is today the Timbo/Slohand showdown?

Good runs to you all. Walt.

Thanks for starting Walt, and happy birthday to you once again.

Yesterday I decided not to go out to the lake to run, but to stay in town as I overslept.  So my friends ran some trails around Lake Grapevine and they stopped to let a few trail bikers go by them.  When they continued on to the parking lot they found that the bikers were a few Secret Service guys escorting W, who lives in Dallas but bikes a lot out at Lake Grapevine.  He chatted with the runners, signed some autographs and let them take some photos.

But I went out there today and ran an easy 8, almost have my legs back.  Beautiful day here in North Texas. One of my friends said "if the weather was like this through all of May we would have to rename it San Diego."  Spareribs

Well he certainly stole the jewel of the country!

docrobin, congrats to you and your sister on your high placement. Walt, happy birthday.

Nice long runs for mari and Walt (with hills).

This morning it was coolish, windy, and rainy so I opted for the TM.  I got in 5 miles at varying speeds from 5.8 to 6.6 mph for an overall pace of 9:44.

A good day and good runs for all.

Ribs.. glad to hear the legs are coming back!

Tom... I wish it was coolish here!  65° sounds not bad but when the dew point is 63° it is a sweatfest!

I cut my planned 15 to 8 miles and declared a stepback week (43 miles vs 50).

We need to hear about the Slo/Timbo challenge!

Speaking of Slo... he  had a goal of being on page one of the 2000 Pace Bunny thread when Dopple Bock hit 2000 miles for 2011.

Well..... Dopple Bock hit 2000 miles today (amazing!) and Slo and I are on page one!  How's that for a silly goal?

              Congrats, Robin -

              Anybody hear from OM?

Pool running in my future after hobbling around trying to clean house.  It's raining here today, so at least I don't have to try and drag the hose around to water the yard.

Thanks.  I didn't know you were the first of your family to move up north like that.

Rest day for me.  Much needed after 7 straight days of some running and gym workouts.  I did spend about 40 leisurely minutes cleaning up branches off the yard after last night's wind storm.  I could hear it howling all night long (or at least in those brief moments where I was awake during the night.)

I was doing the cleaning up while I waited for the charcoal to heat up and while some chicken was cooking.

I'd like to hear something from yesterday's 15k in Michigan or today's marathon (and half) in Wisconsin.

My daughter leaves tomorrow morning for her summer internship in Green Bay.  She cannot handle change and this is no exception.  She probably won't sleep tonight, but after a few days she should be ok.  I still remember her throwing up on me on the way to school - back in the 4th grade - when we moved from WV to Texas.  I had hoped that moving around a couple times as a kid would have helped her adjust better to change now, but I guess it is just something she will have to keep dealing with.  Doesn't matter what anyone says to her or what anyone does.

I went, I ran, I vanned. However, Ragnar should be called HILLnar. Omigod! But it was fun, good clean fun... well, not so clean after 6 people running 3 legs each over 28 hours riding in a van together.... I'm still recovering though, feeling like I haven't eaten for the whole weekend... will post more of a comprehensive report tomorrow...

But yeah, it was fun. Cool

Today's marathon was a rain and mud festival. The PNW broke a record for rainfall ( and that says a lot for this normally wet region). I was soaked to the bone.... Went to change my clothes and they were wet and muddy before I even left the changing tent. It was fun regardless, now I'm ready for a nap.

Happy Birthday, Walt! Nice to hear from you, too.

Yay Orange Mat! Another Ragnar Relay veteran in the books. Can't wait to hear more about it.

We have a hilly little low-key race around here that I've wanted to do for years, but just never had the gumption to get up "early" on a Sunday morning to drive way out there for a race that isn't part of the local series. But... DH thought it would be fun, and knew I wanted to do it so we committed to getting up and out there to do this. It's called the Murphy Dome Roam, and is basically a 3 mile steep (as in STEEP) run up the hill then turn down for 8 miles of mostly easy downhill (some steep, and some ups in there too) back to the start. You can run the race either way, with a long steady climb and 3 miles of steep downhill as the other option. I didn't really know what to expect for time, so checked last year's results to see how some women I know did. One gal ran it in 1:41 and she can beat me on a flat course, so I figured I'd like to beat that time. Those first three miles were a beast, and I did the run/walk thing I do on the steep part of Ester Dome (Equinox). Several people passed me, but I managed to pass all but one of them on the downhill. DH had his bike and caught up to me around the halfway point and kept me company for the rest of the trip down the hill. Lots of roadkill as I passed at least 7 runners, all who had passed me on the way up. Heee! Final time was 1:29:51 so I beat my own goal by 10+ minutes. Good food at the end too with a potluck spread in addition to the standard bananas and Gatorade.

1.1 mile warm up, 11 mile race and 2 mile cool down for 14.1 for the day Gorgeous sunny day too. Now we'll spend the rest of the day cleaning up around here and goofing off on a beautiful Sunday.

Here's the graph of the elevation. They said it was a little over 1300 feet climbing those first 3 miles, and that's about what it looks like. Lots of walk breaks in that first climb, none after mile 3 except one water stop at mile 4 (I didn't stop for the other one).

Hi everyone.  I am always a little "off on my own", it seems, when it comes to weekly long runs.  A, I set aside Sundays as family days (and for recovery), so my long runs are on Saturdays.  Long, also, is extremely relative.  Many of the contributors to forums like this one are much more accomplished distance runners than I am, so 11.3 miles (Saturday's long run distance) is more of a Wednesday medium-long run for most; but the folks I'm training at my office are less experienced than I, and are currently building up from 5 or 6 to 7, 8 miles for their long runs.  It's ALL good, right?

Yesterday afternoon I ran a little faster than I should have for a long run, but I feel great today and was able to hold a steady pace with a very modest progression (excluding a 1-mile warm up and 1-mile cool down). Currently McMillan recommends an 8:10 - 8:40 Easy Running pace, and up to 9:10 for long runs, but it just came so easily that I just went with it.

I have a 5k loop that is 2.5 miles from my house.  When I want to do a long run on a varied course (nice hills but nothing too challenging), I run to the loop and back, and do either 1, 2, or 3 laps of the loop.  Here's how yesterday's run went, and why I'm so pleased with it:

                        Mile 1: 8:49 (wu)

                        Mile 2: 8:22

Next .5: 4:00 (8:00 pace, mostly gradual downhill and a gentle tailwind)

                        Next 5k: 25:53 (8:21 pace)

                        Next 5k: 25:33 (8:15 pace)

                        Next mile: 8:05

                        Next .5: 4:07 (headwind, tiring)

                        Last mile: 9:34 (cd)

So I was well ahead of my prescribed pace, but breathing was easy, my form felt great, no pain anywhere (although it's time to get new shoes - I could feel that during the 2nd mile in particular), and I was able to work outside the rest of the day with no need for a nap. We finished the day with a Princess Bride party at my church, and I, dressed as the Man in Black (not Johnny Cash), was able to stay awake for the WHOLE movie.

I did my LR in pieces yesterday.  The assigned workout was 3:15 w/ 3x:30 @ MP.  When I got through the last repeat, I staggered along for about a mile and decided that another half-hour of pointless suffering wasn't worth it, so I bagged it.  Then last night, I shuffled a very easy run down to the waterfront to make up the missing time.  I think, with two weeks to go to Bayshore, that was the wise choice.

Divechief, to answer your question from yesterday, I'm going to run the Rock N Roll Las Vegas Marathon in early December, courtesy of Brooks.  If I stay injury free, it will be a major goal race.

Erika, that's some major elevation change!

It's raining like crazy here in the Midwest.  My run in Muncie yesterday was in a very light rain, which is always pleasant.  I'm in Rolla, Missouri now and am watching the rain closely out the hotel window to see if I can pull off a short shakeout run, to get the blood moving after sitting all day.

eta-about 2.5 miles and just perfect, cool and in the hills
