Notes

10k at conference finals at Calvin. We had a very specific race strategy coming in. None of us wanted to take the lead until 2k to go with Philly ultimately pulling away. The first lap everyone else expected us to take it, but we didn't. Because of that, we went out in a 87. Some kid from Adrian took over and started running 82-83s. The first 5k was all about patience and I think we hit it in 17:06-17:08. From there an Albion kid took over and started running 77-78s. It still felt easy. I was right on his shoulder and he thought I was going to move. At 2200 to go Philly started coming and the race was on. Philly dropped a 70 which only Bruce, Rylaarsdam, a kid of Trine and I could answer. Philly went again at 1800 which broke us up even more. I battled this trine kid with all I could the last kilometer. I was running my 5k pace from last week but could not break him. He went around me with 350 to go but I kept contact. With 150 to go I thought I was going to get him, but he had one more gear to hold me off. I was able to hold off the two Albion kids for 5th. Philly won in 32:34, Rylaarsdam was 3rd, I was 5th and Matt was 8th. We scored 21 points which was solid. My last 2k was roughly 6:10 with my last 5k roughly 15:50. My last lap was really solid, just not quite fast enough. I gave it everything I could to break that Trine guy, but hats off to him for running the race of his life (there's always that 1 guy in the MIAA). Overall we had a solid start so now we just have to keep the momentum going. Nice to finally score at a conference meet, especially as a senior at home!
