Notes

Nice run with Frank. He did 13 today and I met him for the middle 7 of it. The plan was to do 4 easy and then 2 miles at half pace and then a mile cool down. That's what I did but man it did not feel that great. I was breathing like it was a race. Have I lost that much fitness that this pace which I'm supposed to do for a half felt like I could barely do for a couple miles? My legs felt completely fine, it was just the cardio. Maybe just a bad day.

Of course once again, I forgot my HR strap at work because it's a Wednesday but I'm guessing my HR was really high. I guess there are some other factors here. I have not been that great with these morning runs and my HR does seem to be high for the same level of effort. I played volleyball last night and I might still be a bit sore from the 31 miler from Friday. I guess I'm not to sure where this leaves me for the half. Perhaps I'll play it safe and start at 7:30 and see how I feel throughout the race. 7:30 pace would give me a 1:38:05 which is still a 2 minute PR but I was really thinking closer to 1:35 for this thing which now seems highly unlikely. I guess I'll just see how I feel come race day. I have had doubts like this in a pre-race workout before and then I go on to surprise myself, but this really was tough. Maybe all of this slow running for the last few weeks have really led me to lose my edge. Probably over thinking all of this.

But to end on a positive note the most important thing is my legs are feeling good even with yesterday's decision to play some volleyball. I'm just going to take it easy for the next 3 days. Also, even though I just started counting calories I was down to 161.5 on my home scale today. Maybe that also had something to do with today's performance. I will not be doing the calorie deficit for the 2 days prior to this race.

Nice running with you again Dimitri. I can't believe you've lost your fitness, but when I look at your calendar I see lots of "easy" and "long" runs. Have you been doing speed work, or have all those runs really been easy or long? Hope to see you Sunday at the Rutgers Half!
