I prepared this morning for an hour on the treadmill at 15% grade. This couldn't happen, and I was considering Mt. Toby or Mt. Tom before leaving work. Mt. Tom had plenty to offer with an hour less travel time, and I left with that destination in mind. It all seemed too dodgy as I got closer, so I simply went home to work from there. I was able to prepare myself for whatever I'd meet and set out for Mt. Tom from my back porch with a couple good ideas in mind. I wound up running up the old Christopher Clark road to the Notch and up to Whiting Peak, 4 Miles and over 800'. From there I took trails down past the reservoir and quarry to the B-17 hill, and a very steady 750' climb. Nearing the top I had plenty of spring in my step, and felt I could climb another mile at least. This is more than I could wish for, with Mt. Washington a week away. I went down the mountain towards 141, and around trails hugging the mountain to Whiting Reservoir. Two very large mammals in the woods here, which didn't dart away like deer usually do. Same thing coming down from Whiting Peak. Didn't see anything though. I headed back up the old T-bar ski trail, crossing over to Deadtop Peak, which has some brutal steep sections. I easily dug in to bound up them, to the escarpment and back over to Whiting and home. A total of 14 miles at least, and over 2 and a half hours of running under my feet. I feel very ready for Mt. Washington and believe I could probably go for a PR.
