10:21 Mile 1

Lucinda Bliss and I chatted, she keeps saying we run about the same pace. I think she runs faster, but decided to hang with her and see what happened.

8:24 Mile 2, 8:51 Mile 3

I think it was here I said to her, we'll pay for this. Looked way too fast.

10:01 Mile 4, 19:01 Miles 5 & 6

At this point I think I had pulled ahead of her and would stay ahead for the rest of the race, but I expected her to be on my shoulder as we'd traded places once or twice, it pushed me. I also ran into Scott, who always remembers my name due to my streak.

9:26 Mile 7, 9:39 Mile 8

So, over the course of the race I used a pulsing motion very carefully to add a little vertical help on the climbs and drive forward as well on the flat and down slope. I ran with an absoutely silent step at one point, and debated whether it was an energy sparing or spending tactic. At some point I recongized I needed to really commit to the difficulty because there was still some possibility of debate, and I flipped the switch that leaves the powerhiking at Mt. Tom behind.

29:46 Miles 9 & 10

That said, I did start powerhiking inside the park, after making that first turn. The rules for powerhiking were to maintain acceleration. I would only switch to powerhiking if I could maintain or increase pace. I switched back to running whenenver the slope decreased. This was very, very effecive as the focus on acceleration kept the powerhiking aggressive. Mostly it was arm swinging or pulsing to carry upward and forward. This mindset also focussed on preserving pace through the transition and not losing energy to the stride switch and clumsy steps. The calves started threatening cramps before the final steep pitch, but this strategy kept them at bay. It may also have prevented the sudden sprint I usually put on up the final worst slope. I did switch to running at the final turn. I passed many people with this strategy. Lucinda was a couple minutes behind me. Art, who I'd hoped maybe to catch, was a couple minutes ahead of me. He was a tenth of a mile ahead in mile 8. This is the best time since 2016, being between 1:45 and 1:50 for the last couple years.
