What a nightmare! The trail was tough to follow, stopping every 20-50' to find the next blaze - before dagobah - so I decided to skip dagobah and return via the quarry. Pretty cool, but soft soft surface, the fine clay road was like beach sand. So, a mile back through the quarry in erie silence, there's a vast frozen pool ahead. Cccraaash! Plunking crashing sounds at the opposite side of the pool. I wanted to believe it was just ice falling. But it started when I spoke and lasted a long long 15 seconds, and then it happened again. I felt it could possibly be a beast. Maybe I startled something? I shined my light, but it wouldn't pierce the fog. I kept on, there should be an end coming I could see, about 50' away. Barely 50' visibility at this point. I had been following a sheer rock wall, which turned 90 degrees now to block my progress - no where to go - but up. Here the sheer rock wall became a tumbled rockpile. Freshly split shale, very very sharp, which I did climb hand over hand 30' to the next level of road. Random crashing sounds continued behind me - whatever - I put it behind me once over that rockpile. Real or imagined beasts, totally messed up 500' climb.
