2018 Itasca Oktoberfest 5K
Weather was perfect to race today, much unlike last year. Had a good IL Elite showing again. Legs were feeling good and I was excited to race for the first time in a while. Got out well and settled in the back of the lead pack of 5. Around a half mile in, Brett and another guy separated a bit, leaving me, Evan, and a third guy to run together. Didn't want to let the top guys get too far ahead, so started pushing a bit and ended up solely in third by the 2K mark. From there just kept pushing trying to keep the gap from getting to big. Crossed a clock at 2 miles and realized how quick we were running. Re-energized at that point, since I was feeling good and knew I would be under 16 barring a self-implosion. I was pretty much running all alone the last mile, could tell I wouldn't be able to close on Brett. Turned the final corner and accelerated some into the finish. V happy happy overall with the result. Came in with a goal of 16 flat, so this was a pleasant surprise and reaffirms the work I'm putting in. Would like to be able to hang with the big dogs next time.
