Notes
BIKE portion of the Fingerlakes Triathlon!! Once I was on the bike, I felt OK, but not great. I forgot to bring a towel for transition, so I ended up with cinders all over the bottom of my feet, inside my socks. This was a fairly constant aggravation. Because if it, I had some issues with getting my shoes clipped into the pedals. Always something in transition, this time it was pretty minor. Today, I really wanted to get a decent bike placement and a nice run split. The bike portion was kind of against me though, as the course for this TRI was uphill for about the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the course. The downhill portion was very short and steep, so it felt like the whole course was uphill. This killed my average speed and all I could do was push as much as I could to get the mph back up in a respectable range. I tried to work as hard as I could up the hills, and made up some time on a bunch of people, but I got passed by a lot more people than I wanted to. My swim was better than a lot of the good bikers in my age-group, so quickly a whole mess of fancy TRI bikes went whizzing past me. Despite my best efforts up the hills, I still could not keep pace with anyone close-by to me, and kept falling back. It was an unfamiliar course and I think not riding very much leading up to this TRI got the better of me.
Transition:
I was able to get in and out of transition very quickly, since my bike was close to the bike-in and I just got off running as soon as possible. My T2 time was respectable. The time seems pretty high at 1:51, but the run out was where the swim-in was and the T2 split didn't end until after we were WELL out of the transition area. My placement in the field/sex/AG was pretty high for T2. I was happy with that.
In summary, I need to ride more miles. I am doing better than last year, but I think that is mostly because of the aero-bars, not the quantity of training, because I am training less this year than last.
