Notes

SWIM portion of the Fingerlakes Triathlon!! I was pretty excited for this race, because I had never done it before. It was also only my second triathlon for the year. I went into this race pretty much as laissez faire as possible. I didn't want to get worked up about it, and there was no reason to. I have done this distance before and I felt that I was ready for it this time around. Maybe a little shy on the amount of training I should have done, but ready none-the-less. I knew the swim is usually my best discipline, and I basically didn't train it almost at all. Only a few swims at the Y and a few in the ocean in Ogunquit. Maybe five times, total. Maybe. Today, the weather was pretty much perfect. There was a forecast of rain, but at the start the skies were clear and it was nice and cool, about 55º, with NO wind to speak of. The swim started out pretty easy, since Canandaigua lake is so shallow here. I either walked or porpoised for probably the first 200m. When I actually started swimming, I regretted not training more. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't easy either. The difficulty was mostly due to the fact that what little waves there were, were coming straight out of the South, right into my face. So, I ended up stopping to catch my breath a number of times in the first leg. It was pretty much an out-and-back swim, so the ride home was MUCH easier. This swim-run layout SUCKED SUCKED SUCKED. The swim exit was about a half-mile from the transition area, and the transition entrance was on the far side to boot. The path from the beach to transition was also cinders, so it made for a seriously PAINFUL little run. The splits from Score-This lumped the swim with the run-to-transition into one time (29:53). So, the actual swim speed was a bit faster. Despite not training the swim, I was pretty much right where I wanted to be, percentage-wise in the field though. Good swim, but could have been better.

Transition:

I was able to get the upper part of my wetsuit while I was still in the water, due to the shallow exit. The transition pretty much went off without a hitch after the seriously long run. The split time for T1 started even before we got to the near corner of the transition area, then we had to run the length of transition and my bike was back at the near corner. Made for a slow T1 time, with my field placement for T1 suffering, as usual.

Sleep: yuck (bed at 10:30pm, wake at 5:30am)

Mood: good

Physical: no complaints
