USATFNE Championships mile. Seeded at 4:34, which unfortunately put me as hip 1 in the 3rd heat. Couldn't find my Vics this morning! I'm afraid I may have left them at Terrier... will have to get some new ones before my next MD race.
Since I was hip 1 and was the top seed, I figured this was as good a chance as any to practice getting a good start. I got off the line well, ended up in front, but then must have slowed it down - only came through 1/8 in 33 high and the barrel guys got ahead of us. I got boxed in on lap 2 and two guys shot off. By another lap or two I had worked my way out of traffic and passed one of the guys, but he just slowed down... I was basically running 34.x for the whole race. Never made up the gap on the lead guy until the last 2 laps where I was closing on him, last lap was probably only a low 33 though. Finished a second behind him.
Not a great race, I don't think this was a day where I was gonna break 4:30 but I think I could have ran smarter and won this heat with an SB. Settled in way too much after getting to the front, needed to be ready to react to the reshuffling on lap 2 and get right back up on the 1st guy since it was such a slow race. Ah well.
