Decided to swap today and tomorrow, did my progression run today. A few motivations: I was feeling pretty good this afternoon and was raring to get a harder effort in, I had just mapped out a run that I knew the mile markers for and though was reasonably flat (eh), and I think that for the sake of not bonking Sunday I could use an easy day Saturday.

This was an ok run, a hard effort, and not nearly as fast as I was running one- two weeks ago. It really wasn't all that flat a run - there were no major hills, but the run was rolling constant throughout up and down winding roads. The hills made it very tough to progress smoothly, since it rolled throughout the pace was a little inconsistent. I tried to go for a progressive effort though, trying to hold back early on and then ramping up the effort until the end after mile 5. Splits:

6:34

6:37 (uphill)

6:18 (downhill)

6:40 (uphill)

6:29

6:12

8:01 (1.21 mi)

5:39 (downhill)

6:23 (steep uphill)

I was slamming up that last hill, very hard effort. The locations of miles 7 and 8 are iffy, so the last mile was likely faster and the penultimate a little slower, but ~12' for the last 2 miles seems about right.

Ok run, it is hard to run fast on these hilly routes but this was my fastest run in CA by far. Maybe I will do a BS elevation conversion Summer of Paul style. Also, I'm sure that a lot of my soreness has to do with the mileage ascent... It will pass!

Eh, that's a hard run. Next time start slow with a good warmup couple of miles the sub 7 for the middle, I only want the last bit of time at the marked pace. That was harder than it needed to be. 6:37 uphill 2nd mile, 6:40 uphill 4th mile, if those we at 7 min or slower your last mile would have gone better.

Nolan Feola MD

Good work dude. Seems like you got in your hill work at the same time with all those rollers!

Robert LaMarre

Yeah I was definitely forcing it a little the first half. Also the extra .21 miles in mile 7 was me jogging around squinting at street signs, that's probably another 6' mile if I know where I'm going.

The TLS P

Do yourself a favor: buy a Garmin.

Robert LaMarre

Nah I prefer just using landmarks

Paul Malek

Elevation conversions were Spring of Paul style and that was nowhere near as effective as Summer of Paul

Jarrett Kunze

Seriously, buy a GPS this is ridiculous

Robert LaMarre

I don't understand

Jarrett Kunze

In reference to what Zach said. This landmark nonsense is getting crazy...your progression runs and tempos would be way more controlled if you had a gps watch

Robert LaMarre

No, my progressions would be way more erratic because I wouldn't be attuned to my body and would be a slave to some fallible GPS watch. The pace is wonky because of the hills, the mile markers are just there for some intermittent feedback

Jarrett Kunze

We'll see who the erratic one is at SPAC

J_M_L

Oh man, Jarrett, Rob is an aerobic monster...I'll give you the 800 in a duel...but I think his 1500 PR is better right?

J_M_L

SPAC is a 6k this year, closer to your wheelhouse

Paul Malek

Jarrett dropped a 16:10 on the roads while focusing on the 800! Imagine what he can do with some summer training!

Jarrett Kunze

Yeah his 1500 pr is unfortunately better...for now. I'm glad SPAC is a 6k except for the fact that its a completely random distance. Why not 5k?

The TLS P

UGH 6k!? Why even bother?

Robert LaMarre

Love me those 6ks

J_M_L

6k because what Williams wants Williams gets...

J_M_L

Also, 6ks are cool

Paul Malek

Yeah for GIRLS maybe

Brian Crowley

Don't give in to those pretentious New England Clowns.

Robert LaMarre

Do 6ks count for points?

J_M_L

Nothing counts for points until 9/27

J_M_L

I want the 6k too...I thought it was good stuff at Hamilton this past fall! You calling me pretentious Crowls?

Robert LaMarre

Ah didn't realize Saratoga was so early This year

The TLS P

Can you send me a link to the schedule?

Paul Malek

GOAT log entry?

Robert LaMarre

So what does Pat's 18:10 for 3.3 convert to for a 6k?

J_M_L

He ran on roads
