First run in Rancho Santa Fe and it was a doozy! Wasn't feeling great from the start, definitely stiff from the plane ride. Mapped out my run in advance, planned out a 15+ mile loop. Ran down the hill on Camino Real to San Dieguito Road. It's always a little surreal running in California for the first time in a while, it just seems so different (street signs, architecture, foliage, even the smell!). Followed San Dieguito road east for a longgg time, about 5 miles just on that road. Passed by a polo club, two country clubs, a riding club, and several gated communities. It was pretty hot, 75 degrees and no shade anywhere, I was feeling pretty beat by ~40 minutes in. Definitely need to do my long runs first thing in the morning! Anyways, I was starting to consider turning around because I was feeling so crappy and wasn't sure where the trailhead I was looking for was, but I reallly did not want to run back on San Dieguito. Finally hit the trailhead to my destination, Black Mountain Ranch, at 47:50 (7.4 miles, 6:26 pace - wait wut). Oof, that was a rough segment - some nice dirt trails, but had to run up, down, and up some very steep hills. My overheated state could hardly take it, my quads KILLED. I actually had to take a breather going up the hill, and ran only 9' pace for this segment (although mapping the trails might be cheating me a little, I took a wrong turn and had to backtrack at one point). Finally I made it back to the street at the top of Black Mountain and was actually feeling good! Ready to bring it home. But then disaster struck. I was pretty sure I was going the right way, but was starting to second guess myself. I knew that Artesian Road was supposed to turn into Zumaque, but instead at the end of the road was a big NO TRESPASSING gate! I thought I'd made a wrong turn somewhere and that it was a driveway, it turns out that was just Zumaque. I doubled back to try a dirt path that looked promising, maybe... but I just ended up back in Black Mountain Ranch! I was forced to resign myself to going back the way I came. But now I was feeling hot and crappy again, not looking forward to all the extra running... so I stopped at 1:45 and Gallowalked the last 4.25 miles PCav style.

Well, it turns out that as far as bonks go, this wasn't actually too bad. But, I was pretty miserable the whole time! A lot of that mostly had to do with not knowing where I was or how far I had gone and just assuming I was running slow, plus having to stop going up the Black Mountain Ranch hills. I think if I was a little more familiar with the area, I would have had a decent run. Still, definitely will be getting future long runs done in the morning, not in the hottest part of the day.

All in all, a GOOD second week of the summer. Just over 80 miles @ 6:42 avg. Missed one shakeout, nbd. Runs were all fair, had one solid one on Thursday. Long run this morning wasn't great, but it was ok. Weight went up a bit but not by toooo much considering the horrible diet fostered by birthday week. Start work next week, so it's all about creating a good routine! Get plenty of sleep, get in my morning run, work, get in my afternoon run, and eat well.

Protein hits every 2-3 hours at work will help stabilize energy for after work runs and will also keep you from eating junk
