Masters Running

Totally Tuesday 8/15/23 (Read 39 times)

I had 2 bee stings 4 years ago, a day apart. The second one swelled up my hand like a balloon, and I felt fatigued and fluish for 2 days after. This wasp sting wasn't quite as bad as that last one, but close. I don't want to get another sting this year or it will likely be worse, with a chance of anaphylaxis (I've no history of that, but these things are unpredictable). MBE joked, people worry about bears and cougars, but that's not really what they should worry about.

The job: the new company says they want to retain as many people as possible, converting them into full fledged Borg employees eventually, but at the same time, say no remote work (except in special circumstances for certain jobs). It's mixed messages about what will happen. Very little change for 6-9 months until we hit a major regulatory milestone, but after that, I expect a rather large exodus. They made it clear, they will shut down the Seattle and San Francisco offices (possibly as early as January), likely the Vancouver BC research lab too.

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

Anne- I hope you get some answers (good answers) on the shoulder.  I hear you about doctor appointments.  You are still young Smile, but I have friends who define their lives by what doctor they are seeing that day.  I felt that way at the eye specialist last week.  Everyone seemed so old, and as hard as doctors try, there is usually a wait in the waiting room and, to me, it's depressing.

...sometimes I feel like its another part time job managing doctors appointments...

I guess I should be thankful I have good insurance and flexibility with work.

1 on that.   I switched from my previous Allergist office to an Ear Nose and Throat center that also treats allergies, and had them look at my sinuses and my ears last month.   Now I have a CT Scan of my sinuses scheduled for tomorrow morning, and three appointments in October  and November for a follow-up to my hearing test (I failed) to get fitted for hearing aids and to give them a test ride.  They dropped the ball after my hearing test - they were supposed to call me the next day to set up those three appointments, and because of that, I couldn't get scheduled for September, but instead had to push them out to the end of October and beyond.  DD and her DH are expecting our first grand baby ~ the first week of October so we're keeping our calendars clear until after the 15th.

I have to put an easy workout together for this evening.  I'm keeping track of the ratio of hard/moderate effort workouts relative to easy workouts/rest days, and so far this month the hard/moderate ones are leading the charge and I need to back off a bit, even after resting Friday and Sunday.  So I'm going back into the archives in my RA log to (hopefully) find an easy workout that incorporates some of the drills that I used to do but haven't done in a year or two.  Gotta keep the workouts interesting, even when they're easy.  I also have to consider keeping a good balance between butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.

        Have a greta day Masters!

slap some moistened tobacco on the sting,

it constricts the blood vessels and the venom can't spread.....

tomwhite two hours waiting for a storm to pass! Wow, that must have been some storm.

anneb you must have had all of the internet's bandwidth yesterday. My connections were awful!

SteveP that is sad about the delivery driver. My father's side had a lot of deaths due to cancer. It has made me really paranoid about coming down with it (again).

Holly S. I wish I could get my SIL to do what you did and use a dog sitter. She and her DH just refuse to leave the dogs with third parties for more than a few hours. Which means they can never take an extended trip together, unless they can drive to the place with their dogs.

Tramps if it is not recorded on your Garmin (?), did it really happen?

Dave59 sorry this round is such a drag. Be well soon.

coastwalker my DW went through quite a bit of experimenting with drugs for her cholesterol. I guess BP medication is the same trial and error.

enkephalin I hope it turns out less Borgy (Borgie?) than you expect. It does seem odd that they would buy the shop, then close all of the active offices and tell people to move across the country or to Europe or leave. What then were they buying?

deez4boyz well there is no rule against walking in the rain!

RunnerKSA Crested Butte is one of my favorite ski resorts! We were there once during Mardi Gras and wound up with beads from a parade they were having in town. Quite a sight, mountains and a Mardi Gras parade.

TammyinGP funny you mentioning your long run. I was just talking to a colleague out in Utah and she recently ran a marathon. She said that was it because she hates any runs over 12 or so miles. She is young, fast, and in good shape. We will see how long she holds out.

anneb and BTY once you start suffering from O.L.D., alas, doctor visits become a regular part of calendar management.

Day 2 of testing negative for COVID. Good thing too. My DW's birthday is tomorrow. She is really tough to get presents for and I finally came up with one. Alas, it is being shipped from California and is not scheduled for delivery until Saturday. It is just a little thing so not like it was going to be a big reveal. Oh well, the flowers I ordered should show up on time.

In running related news, with two clear COVID tests in hand, I did a gym workout. Running tomorrow.

When I have to go see the vascular surgeon, that is part of Bluhm cardio at Northwestern, it's a pretty big place and I'm sometimes the youngest person there by about 15-20 years I'd guess. But hopefully, I'm almost done with them (the vascular group).

To scheduling, most of the time doctors schedule in 15 minute increments. I have even seen some are 10 minutes. Which is really not enough... but they are generally forced to do that. (I'm generalizing that Vanderbilt is not that different from NW, another big educational/medical). It is annoying to wait, but I think you just have to pack your patience (and your computer, if you're working). Some doctors are worse than others...or are they just the ones that care enough to spend time w/patients, answer all of their questions, etc.

Long day at the food pantry.  8 of 12 volunteers out sick made for quite a scramble for the rest of us. A few of the clients were getting cranky with the wait but we were doing the best we could.

came home to run and bit off more than I could chew.  I ran the “ out” but walked a ton on the way back.  In hindsight I should have waited one more day.

Holly S. I wish I could get my SIL to do what you did and use a dog sitter. She and her DH just refuse to leave the dogs with third parties for more than a few hours. Matt - Rover.com, which was recommended by Enke, is awesome - sort of like an Uper for pet sitting.  The woman/couple who watched our dogs did a great job (and the price was about half what if would have been to board).  Their golden doodle got on really wall with our dogs and she sent me lots of pics and videos of them playing with their dog, joyously frolicking in their fenced in backyard, etc.  We are planning play dates for them to get back together, and I also offered to have their dog visit us if they go out of town.  With the kids our of the house, we take a lot more short trips, and this gives our spoiled whining kids off the hook of watching our dogs wen we go out of town.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

enke - yikes! Since my knee won't let me fo it any more,  maybe liberal dosages of Off, towelette off perspiration, sun sleeves up to the upper arm, etc. can defeat the nasty wasps instead of them you. We won't have gorgeous hiking days like this until next summer, or maybe they'll hibernate come the Indian summer days of September and October,  if any. Good lick

Holly- my daughter/ SIL have had good luck with Rover.com.   We have pet sitters stay at our house because we have cats, too.  Plus the senior dogs had medicine etc.  It's REALLY a pain planning a trip-  I line up a pet sitter before I even book anything.  It is expensive, but it's a good solution for us and someone is here to get mail, make sure the house is safe etc.  This week's trip a former co-worker who does a LOT of dog/house sitting is staying.  She isn't my regular person, but she was available and does fine.

The girl took off for her month trip to Greece with college buddies today. Our house guest will be leaving tomorrow. Finally a quiet house! Except for the cat, who will remind us it needs things.

Rover.com, I'd say not so much like Uber (ie, instantaneous solution) but like AirBnB. With detailed reviews from previous users.

TomWhite - interesting and makes sense. I'll pack a few cigs next hike. Not joking.

There is a labour day hike I haven't cancelled yet, the lake is about 8 hours hike (for me) from the trailhead (4,000 feet elevation gain), and maybe I can wear so much bug spray, I'll feel safe. I dunno.

Twocat - they are buying the drug(s) in development, ie, the intellectual property. The 2 frontrunners are likely to receive marketing approval by FDA at some point and provide eventual $$ for them. They can slowly take over the day to day operations of our drug development into their machine now that we have done the groundwork to prove these drugs are viable items. It's sad they are tossing out the humans that built this company and will not keep a local presence, but that is the economics of a global company.

anneb and BTY once you start suffering from O.L.D., alas, doctor visits become a regular part of calendar management.

This is so true.   Between my own doctor visits (Cardiologist, Crohn's disease specialist, Ophthalmologist and Allergist, now add audiologist), and my 89-year-old Mom's doctors (you name it, she goes there), I have my hands full.  Reminds me I should probably take care of the blood test the Cardiologist wants done this month for next  month's appointment while I'm off of work to get my CT scan of my sinuses tomorrow noon-time)

Double posting because I did manage to make up an interesting yet easy workout tonight.  I'll put it this way - it was easy on the upper body because it was more of a lower body and core emphasis workout.  The Main set segment was 4 x 50-yard repeats of both dolphin kick with fins and a kickboard and dolphin kick on my back with fins in StreamLine (SLOB).

At the end of my workout I was supposed to cool down with 4 x 25 yard freestyle sprints ( I guess it's a good way to cool down, or maybe warm down?) followed by a 100-yard freestyle at cool down pace.  But I started doing the 100-yarder first and was barely one second into it when I realized what I'd done and decided to make that a strong steady effort instead, and finished it in 1 minute 19 seconds.  Then I did the 4 25's.  They were supposed to be in progression, at 18/17/16/15 seconds.   Instead I got 17/15/15/15.  I was giving it everything I had, and maybe a wee bit more, trying to get down to 14 seconds on those last two reps.  Nope.  But I did feel that I kept it an easy workout, even though my quads were burning like crazy each time I finished a 50-yard dolphin kick rep.  Distance was 2,400 yards which has me on pace for a 35-mile month.  That will be a new monthly distance PR if I pull that off.

                            Good night Masters!

Dave59 - I hope your day went well.

Jay - Don't let TwoCat read about your walking in the rain.

Enkephalin - Sorry about the "writing is on the wall".

Anneb - Sorry to hear about all the Dr. Appointments.

BTY - The excitement on your grandchild's debut is very apparent.  Love it.

                              Tom White - Good news!

                              TwoCat - Happy gym day!

AT PT's suggestion, I hung on the inverted table.  After 5 minutes of hanging, I did crunches.  Jaw exerciser I've used to delight 100s of people arrived in the mail 5 years ago Tuesday.

                              Love their happy faces.
