Perch - I hate to say this, but your running log looks really strange. Tongue
I gave up on that awhile ago and use a stand alone Pegasus Software "RunLog". But I still record my races in the RA log

Perch's Profile "I don't know if running adds years to your life, but it definitely adds life to your years." - Jim Fixx "The secret is to make in your mind possible what was not possible before. The secret is to make easy what was difficult, instead to make difficult what really is easy." - Coach Renato Canova

I gave up on that awhile ago and use a stand alone Pegasus Software "RunLog".
Given all the talented techno-types who run, I never understood why someone hasn't updated the DavidHayes Excel log. It's a great basic, stand-alone log and--since it's in the ubiquitous Excel format--you can add pages (for particular training cycles, etc) to customize. I even e-mailed Hayes asking if he knew of any updates that run smoothly on more recent versions of Excel but got no reply. It would be a great open-source group project. (Hint, hint.)

      Be safe. Be kind.

Cold and windy here today, but the sun was out and after 6 miles on the TM yesterday I decided to venture forth into the cold and wind. Eight easy miles in 8:01 pace this morning. My legs are still a little sore from Saturday's long run so hopefully today will help that. Bill, yes you do remember that happening to me at Cleveland. I never even thought about what the clock would read - just thought it was sort of audacious of them to ask me to run more after finishing 26.2 in the cold and wind. SLO, that sounds like quite a frightening experience for both of you. I hope it did turn out to be a good lesson for your new driver and didn't just scare him to death. Now I think you need to go get a new spare tire! Sue, you are amazing with your long TM runs. There is just no way I could do 18 miles on a TM. nono, I hope you are feeling better soon. Sounds like a rest day is just what you need. Twocats, here's hoping that all these tests get you an answer. I cannot imagine how frustrating it is to not know what the problem is and to not be improving even with time off from running.

SLO, quite an adventure. I have a different take on it however. A big scare like that makes a careful driver, and as long as no one was hurt, that accident becomes a historical asset. I am on my way up to Sioux City this afternoon. Hope I have some decent running weather this week. 2.4 miserable healing miles for me today, followed by a full stretch and core workout at the Y. I have timed this week for cutback because I am traveling, so looking forward to my first day off from running tomorrow since January 8th. I have a favor to ask all of you. Riblet uploaded to youtube his Christmas concert piano piece and with my promotional efforts, got lots of hits on the site, which made him very excited. Yesterday we uploaded his latest number, the jazzy theme from the Peanuts cartoon. If you have a minute today will you have a look, and if you feel like it, leave him a comment. Thanks so much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n2-k_IxktQ Spareribs

not that meg and I lived in SIN or anything like that, maybe souci too, but maybe you oughta try the Singapore Marathon sometime.

Tramps you might want to look at Sport Tracks as a stand alone log. It does make keeping a log from a GPS watch as easy as possible, but it will do a great job if you enter item manually as well.

'Slo - Wow! Tough way for your DS to learn a driving lesson, but like others have said, this will (hopefully) make him a more careful driver in the future. He was probably pretty glad his dad was around! And so glad no cows were hurt in the during the learning of the lesson. Wink I have no clue how to drive on ice. Never done it, never want to. Mariposa - Aaaah! I didn't think teenagers knew how to do that! Sounds like great kids. SRLopez - Big grin Twocat - Dang, hope they get it all figured out soon. Did 45 min on my stationary bike this a.m., with about a 20 min light weight workout after. My longest workout since my surgery. Was a tad shaky at the end, but I'm gonna chalk that up to being really hungry. Fortified myself afterward with a glass of milk and Ovaltine. Watched "Murphy's Romance" while biking nowhere. Great movie. I adore James Garner. Smile

                    Marathon Maniac #957

Yesterday's overall marathon winner blazed in so fast that he passed up the escort motorcycles and he had no Tape ready for him. So they had to reenact it for the winner's photo. Of course the time on the clock shows incorrectly as a (very slow for him) 3:10 time. I recall this happened to Jdmom3 in Cleveland a few years back.
JDmom - I knew you were fast, but I didn't realize you were THAT fast! Wow!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Leslie I love that movie! It's been ages since I saw it, but I used to have the biggest crush on James Garner... Yes SLO, that was a scary incident, and glad no one was hurt. But I'm gonna say your DS was driving too fast if he's spinning on the road at 50 MPH. We have lots of accidents around here (driving on ice and slick hard pack so many months out of the year) and most of the time the problem is basic speed. Twocat I sure hope the dueling docs can figure something out soon. That's gotta be more than frustrating. Congratulations on your kids' big win and best of luck for London! Mariposai, if my kids ever took it upon themselves to make a lasagna dinner AND set the table, I'd probably die of shock. But then again, there were girls involved... Sue, that's a lotta treadmill miles, grrl! I spend a lot of time on the treadmill during the week it seems, but on the weekends it's so nice to get outside and get some sun! Mary, I love the bookend dogs. That's so cute! Hope you guys all enjoy your rest day. Pardon me as I ruminate over yesterday's events... As all of you know, I run in cold temps a lot. I don't even think twice about MLR in the mid minus-20's, no problem. Yesterday though, showed me how easy it can be to underestimate the conditions and head for trouble in a hurry. (well, ok, maybe not a hurry as it did take me a couple of hours to get there) I over dressed at the beginning of my run, which was on pretty much protected bike paths in or on the edge of trees, not much wind. I got pretty sweaty in the first 11 miles. Stopped at the car to drink/nibble and felt a little chill. No worries, I'll be on the road again soon. But my last hour took my up the hill and on the ridge with a brisk breeze, nothing hard, but very chilling. I was amazed at how fast my face "froze up" and my hands couldn't get warm. This meant the "thermostat" was shutting down and preserving heat in the core... for awhile. I stopped and put my hands on my face a couple times, and then started shivering. Ruh roh. Head to the car, fast. Well, legs tired and chilled so fast was not an option. What went wrong? I should've put my balaclava on when I stopped (yes it was in the car). I should've had a dry shirt to change into mid-run. I think these two things would've made all the difference. Temps were in the 16-18 range so I should have been ok. Just goes to show you what a little wind on wet clothes can do. Ok, hypothermia lesson over. I'll run a bit and maybe some weights after work while DS2 is at B'ball practice.

I use Sport Tracks for my Garmin dumps and nice elevation charts. But, to my knowledge, it doesn’t have some basic features—like the ability to input a training plan and track actual vs. planned mileage (or am I missing something?). Also, I may just be paranoid, but I always worry about the long-term viability of any such software. Will they be around next year? In addition to the fact that it’ll be around for the foreseeable future, the beauty of a log in Excel is that you can easily add worksheets and customize. I’ve got a worksheet set up for our local Grand Prix race/point system. Each training cycle, I use another Excel worksheet to set up my training plan with simple weekly totals (plan/actual) and percentages; like the Hayes “Plan” worksheet but with more details about type of run, etc. The Hayes log, though, has major limitations; most notably it is set up for a single calendar year with no way to accumulate data over time.

                          Be safe. Be kind.

I feel so strong now!! Just in from my lunch hour weights and core work . Actually just being sarcastic - my arms feel like rubber bands again. Meg, Tramps, Mariposai, Erika and Leslie - thanks much! The last half hour on the TM was verging on torture - think I pushed it a bit doing 18 milers two weeks in a row. Next weekend will be a cut back weekend - and hopefully on the trail instead of the treadmill. Leslie - I love James Garner too - even some of his more recent appearances like The Notebook and the Ya-Ya Sisterhood movie. Rockford Files was one of my faborite programs. I have an office full of beads that I throw "virtually" to all of you ("throw me something mister":-). Happy Mardi Gras, and, if you are lucky enough to have a King Cake, may you also be lucky enough to get a piece without the baby. Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!!

"The Rockford Files" days. {{{ssssiiiigggghhhh}}}} Yes Scary hypothermia story, there. Now make sure you keep those clothes handy. Evil grin Years ago when we first moved, here The Hub and I went fishing one cold, early morning. By the time we got back to the car, I had been shivering for so long, my jaw seized up. When I tried to talk - nothing! Then we started laughing, but I couldn't open my mouth. Had the heater blasting my face for about 5 minutes before it loosened up. I'm sure sometimes The Hub looks back on short moment with a bit of nostalgia. Wink

Holly, yes I actually won that marathon but only by dint of the fact that the woman ahead of me seized up with leg cramps during the last mile. I was dying during mile 23 along the lake and into the wind but had enough to pick it up somewhat once we finally got out of the wind and into the final straight away to the finish. I just thought they were nuts when they told me that they wanted me to go back and run the finish again because they had forgotten to put up the tape. I did it though! Erika, that is a scary hypothermia lesson. I find that stopping at all is often the problem for me. I can be running along just fine and feeling good, but if I have to stop when it's cold and windy I get cold very quickly. My own hypothermia story occurred during a long run in sleet and freezing rain and wind. I was fine going with the wind at my back, but when I turned around to go home I made it probably four or five miles before I started shivering uncontrollably. I wound up having to take shelter in a 7-11 and warm up and call my dh to come get me. I'm not sure I'd venture a long run in wind and sleet/freezing rain again.
