Marathon Maniac #957

Holly - If you keep working extra hours for no compensation, your boss has no incentive to hire extra help.

No, what I am saying is that I am NOT working extra - I am sticking to my 40 hours each week, maybe an hour or two more sometimes, but that is it.  However, I feel so pressured by the workload and the deadlines that I often think that if I "just work extra this weekend, maybe I will be caught up and I won't feel so stressed."  But I don't, because 1) I am not getting paid to and 2) I know I will never really get caught up anyway.

I'm just tired and grumpy.  It's important to me to do a good job, and I feel like I have too many plates in the air to really be doing a thorough job of it, and am afraid I will miss a deadline.

So, reintro?  Not sure I ever did one.  Holly, married, mother of two, 14yo and 20yo, both at home and in high school and college, respectively.  Elder Law paralegal, so I do the crisis Medicaid and Veterans Benefits cases.  Live in SW Ohio with my 10yo Cairn/Westie and new Westie puppy.

    I wish I had a puppy cam...

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

      I wish I had a puppy cam...

Good!  Just keep reminding yourself that in the end, it's your boss' business, he's the one who has to answer for anything that goes wrong, he's the one who needs to worry about a malpractice suit if a deadline is missed because he fails to provide adequate man power for the amount of work he is taking on.  Reminding yourself of that, however, is easier said than done, especially when you know a person's financial well-being may be at stake.  Hang in there!

And we, too, wish you had a puppy cam.

HeIlo from Sardinia! I just checked in today, and see that Jay and Twocat have been talking about me- my ears were burning, I guess!  The hills here are just as steep as the hills at home in Colorado, except that they start at sea level here. I've been doing more hiking than running lately, but many miles every day, so it's all good. Today it was warm enough for a swim in the sea after our hike.

Wish I could respond to more folks but typing on my phone is tedious. So I'll just wave and say hi!  And happy trails!

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Jay, I’m sure you’ll pass your physical with flying colors. Paul, that must be a big lake to get 13 miles. Leslie, losing a parent is not easy and the sadness does linger for a long long time.  Today is MrStarr’s 64th birthday.  I should play that Beatle’s song for him, “When I’m Sixty-Four”. Since I play the clarinet, I love the instrumental part of that song.

Re-introduction for me: I have been on this forum ever since the CoolRunning site fell apart. I found that forum when I started the Couch-to-5K back in 2004 when I started running. I am 60 now and plan to retire from my job as customer service rep at the Public Utility Office in one year (when MrStarr is on Medicare).  We have three children, 38, 36 and 33.  The six grandkids are so much fun.  We live on Lake Okabena in SW Minnesota where we both grew up. I run for fitness mainly with a few races here and there.  Running is so hard for me but I am persistent at it.  My secret goal is to run a triathlon (super-sprint).  Oops, I guess it's not a secret anymore.

Re-introduction: Hi, I'm Paul. I live in a suburb of OKC. I think I'm the last Oklahoman still around. Opie not only doesn't post in here anymore, but he moved to New Mexico. I haven't seen evryday post since early this year. I started running in 2004 & probably found the CR forums sometime in 2005. My posting to the daily is a bit irregular. I rarely miss posting on Holly's 40/40 weekly thread. And I don't think I've ever missed a monthly mileage thread (wildchild & milktruck). Does anyone remember who did that thread before wildchild? I've met a lot of y'all irl & and am Facebook friends with quite a few others that no longer frequent RA.

StarrRuns, the lake is a little over 8 mile around, but today I ran from one end of the dam around the lake to the other end of the dam & then back (out-and-back run) to make my 13 miles.

As the senior member of this site (I turned 83 4 days ago) and am mostly a lurker now as I get back to running after a knee replacement 6 months ago, I'll say a few words about myself. I'm married to Marj (mrrun) I'm a retired psychiatrist and have been running for 43 years.  I've run 40 marathons including 11 Bostons, the last of which was shortly after I turned 76. Since my surgery I've already run one 5K. and hope to keep going as long as I can.

We live in the Boston area near most of our children and grandchildren.

              Life is sweet.

Well, cripes - guess I need to say a tad bit more about myself (twist my arm ).

51 yo.  Started running shortly after turning 40.  Before that, hated running with a passion (or at least thought I did). Found RA after CoolRunning was taken over by zombies.  Running does not come easy for me, but I love trail running and mostly do ultra trail races, and I get to run in the among the redwood giants.  Am currently on the injured reserves (going on 3 mos now) and have to forego my big plans to give my first 100 miler a shot in September.

I've been married for almost 30 years, I don't have any children, but I do have 5 cats that are very spoiled.

I've been blessed to have been part of two RA meetups and hope to be part of others in the future.

                  LOSING WEIGHT

Dan - a full IM or at least a 100-mile race

is usually necessary to lose that much.

Good!  Just keep reminding yourself that in the end, it's your boss' business, he's the one who has to answer for anything that goes wrong, he's the one who needs to worry about a malpractice suit if a deadline is missed because he fails to provide adequate man power for the amount of work he is taking on.   Hang in there!

Yep, the owner your boss gets paid for his work and stress

You don't get paid to stress for someone else

so take a deep breath and don't.

                  RUNNING

After yesterday's deluge, the clouds were so rained out

that the moon and rising sun were on-and-off visible

on a perfectly dry morning five mile 'mute.

                  INTRODUCTION

I am not a runner but started running

one marathon a year in 1977 on a whim

to see if winter skiing was sufficient training

to run 26.2 miles in under four hours.

For twenty-five years, it was.  After forty years,

                  I'm now reduced to ultra-pacing, i.e. walking.

                  Started annual triathlons in 1978

                  because such an event seemed

so goofy, and probably fun. It was,

                  especially as poor swimmers

get the thrill of passing hundreds

of the fast swimmers on the latter legs.

Mostly barefoot since 1990 or in

                  various traditional Japanese footwear.

Belatedly discovered that, with judicious pacing,

ultras up to 100-miles are just as feasible

for non-trainers too, . . . and even more fun.

Since I don't train, I never had any running friends

until Marathon Maniacs was invented and, now,

running friends herein, especially jay's daily,

                  to keep me motivated.

                  .

note: Erika lives in the real Alaska

and has my deepest awe for her

                  lifetime of running up there.

                  However, anyone who's survived

                  the Mountain Marathon in Seward

five times, along with other qualifiers,

is a lifetime Sourdough of sorts, too.

I used to live in Anchorage which, they say,

is the closest city to Alaska except for Seattle

where I am now supposedly retired.

ps leslie - sorry about the derailment of your first century but you've got many years to go. good luck.\

paul - thanks for the opie update.

                  .

                  happy birthday henry.

                  what a great Boston history.

This is excellent and I appreciate all this information.   Is there anyway we could pin this thread or else copy it so that we don't lose track of all the re-introductions?

And I don't think I've ever missed a monthly mileage thread (wildchild & milktruck). Does anyone remember who did that thread before wildchild?

                      It was Tramps!!

Tet, it's Mount Marathon (name of the mountain), and it's not a marathon but a tortuous climb and descent on that thing. The whole race is less than 6 miles, I think, but it's a real terror.

Leslie, I love the phrase that CoolRunning was taken over by zombies! Very accurate.

I love the RA meetups here. And I think I've done more marathons with Holly than anyone else! We always get a kick out of going out for meals or to the expo and tell people we run marathons together all over the country. They seem surprised when we say we're from Alaska and Ohio.  I don't know why I felt the need to share that but mentions of marathons and meetups made it pop into my head.

(BTW... Holly, any update on Steamtown? I haven't entered yet but want to before price increase.)

[At the risk of over-posting today... I'm just gonna sneak back in here to report my run: 5.2 easy miles after work.]

Henrun is the senior male member - I qualify as the senior female member - 72. Last year I ran my last marathon - a mere 5 and I've only been running for about 15 years.  we try to attend as many RA meet-ups as possible. fewer people are running boston these days, so it looks like we'll be forced to travel more...

                        Mike E

                        MM #5615

                          Hello everybody!

You want me to introduce myself? Okay...well...I’m Mike E (aka Mike) and I have the usual old story that might best be told like this:

It’s the story of a lovely lady

Who was bringing up a boy a two young girls.

All of them had hair of gold, like their mother,

And, yes, the youngest one did, in fact, have curls.

It’s the story, of a man named Mike E,

Who was busy with three kids of his own,

It was the four of them, living all together,

Yet, sometimes, Mike felt all alone.

Till the one day when the lady met this fellow

And they knew it was much more than a hunch,

That this group must somehow form a family.

That's the way we all became the Evans Bunch.

The Evans Bunch, The Evans Bunch,

That's the way we became the Evans Bunch.

Yes, the story may sound like a familiar TV show...and while Mr. Brady and I might have the same first names—that is where the similarities stop. Not only was I not smart enough to always have the answers to all the issues that came up like Mike Brady did, but I was also not smart enough to quit having kids! We had two more boys together and then we were another popular TV sitcom...Eight is Enough...and, fortunately, I am not familiar with their jingle...

We are, also, now “blessed” with 18 grandkids and 1 great grand kid...our kids learned nothing from us!

I also like to run...So, I ran 6 miles, tonight.

That's it.  Gotta go.  See ya!

Weight loss for me is fairly easy. I drink too much Dr. Pepper so I cut it down to 20 ounces per day to lose weight. I know I'm not supposed to drink that crap. Probably the worst thing in the world to drink.

I ended out doing 3.3 very easy miles today. I have finally found joy in doing some slow runs.
