For some reason I got it in my head to go balls out today and my goal was to hit 20:37. With all the miles and the fact that I hadn't raced in over a month I was due for a big jump. Irrational, overconfident...like a miniature Jason Terry. I really thought I had this in me today too….that’s the funny thing. The goal was to go out at 6:40, 6:25, and then hang on at the end to run 6:50 before the final .1. It was a good reality check and fun to go out that hard albeit irrational and stupid. But what the hell, you’ve got to learn what you can do and I’d rather go way to hard then be pussy and have too much at the end. It ended up being 6:24, 6:47 (I thought it was faster while I was running) which translated into a 13:11 split at 2 miles. I was shooting for 13:05 but still close to pace and I was still looking at sub 21. But it wasn’t meant to be. The last mile I was really struggling and only got to a 7:08 with lots of work at the end. By the watch, I think the 6:46 is my fastest overall pace for a 5k (based on the actual distance of the watch) and that’s awesome. Even though I didn’t meet the stated goal it was a good learning experienced and a more conservative first mile (say 6:40) would serve me well in future races. Maybe try again at some point soon.
